Ketchinkan, AK--2000 Being stationed on a 110' Coast Guard Cutter was the best thing that could happen to my 18yr old smart ass. For the previous 2 years I had been shot at and missed, s*** on and hit--it was a wild ride in the Gulf of Alaska. One day I got orders to go back home to Florida and I decided I needed a rig that was a bit more dependable than my old Jeep to get me back. I had seen a 62 in the used lot at a local dealership and decided to check it out. Much to my surprise the salesman threw me the keys and said be back in an hour--wow was that a mistake!!! Honestly I did not mean to get her stuck on my first test drive but hey, it happens! It was January, in Alsaka, and somehow the front axle came to rest on a large stump barried under several feet of snow. Long story short, my cruiser went through a lot of nasty stuff that day before it came to rest on the stump and the next day I bought it from that salesman for way to much money. It was the first car I had ever bought without any help from my folks, I was 20 yrs old.
Since that day my cruiser and I have been trough a lot together, I ended up driving her 5,000 miles home from Alaska, making out in the back seat with every Canadian girl that would let me along the way. It has been a wonderful, wonderful truck. This Sunday I will celebrate my 1yr anniversary with my lovely wife and one year since I decided to sell the cruiser. I know you are all sreaming in angst and disgust, but hear me out. I put her in the paper for one full week and got exactly one call from a 16yr old Paris Hilton type, needless to say she was not a serious buyer. I decide to hold on to her a little longer and for the past several months she has been in my father-in-laws auto shop getting tuned up whenever somebody gets a free chance. After this weekend I am bringing my fine Japenese lady home and the fun is gonna begin. I just found this site while I was surfing the web during a boring Public Relations lecture at the University of Florida (go gators!), and all my cruiser karma is at a very high level--I have decide to drive her till I die.
All of you seem like really down to earth nice folks and I look forward to picking your brains and helping anybody else out with the few tips I have picked up over the six years of cruiser ownership. I apologize for the length here, but I am a History major, and being long winded is my thing, again--sorry. Anyway, this is my first thread and if you guys help me out a little I will promise to make them a lot shorter from here on out. I own a 1989 FJ-62 Landcruiser and I sure am glad I found you guys! Thanks for the open ears---Adam

Welcome to mud!!!
that's a great history of your cruiser. don't even think about selling it not just because is a 60, is because also the good memories and is your first car.

you'll find a lot of help in here and we will make you change your mind about selling it.

Welcome to the site

First off let me say, Stay out of The Ultimate Thread...its like the everglades down in florida, you can get lost and eaten by the proverbial alligators and lost pet pythons.....

Secondly....If you do venture to the chit chat threads Don't get offended by anything written(especially by me) as everyone here is super opinionated about something or another: Guitarists, Politics, Moral values, Canadiens, mexicans, etc....

Thirdly....Read the FAQs they have saved me alot of searching and reposting by reading them....there are tons of them and one of the best is "Best Mods for under $50...read it, you will get ideas.

Again welcome to the site and oh yeah, the Gators suck ;)

lunyou

Thanks for the warm welcome!!! Anybody got any ideas for "must dos" when I get my rig back? Like I said before it is an 89' fj-62--primarily stock with the exception of 31" BFG's. Any suggestions? Man am I excited!:D :D

sorry to say this but...
new tires (33x12.5) or even bigger ones!!! i think i'm going 35x13.5;)
new lift kit (old man emu)
new bumpers
lockers
and the list goes on and on....

once you start doing mods to your cruiser you'll never stop. there's always new things to spend th money at.

Are you still in the CG? Welcome, from one Coastie to another. Don't you just love Kodiak:D I can't wait to go back. Let's see some pics!!

Welcome College Boy, Don't apologize about being long winded. I like to here peoples real life experiences with their Cruiser's. Don't ever sell that baby. I tend to "turn over" vehicles often and my Cruiser has almost twice the miles of my other 2 vehicles combined but the Cruiser would be the last one i would sell.
Even though your Gators now have a better hoops program than my Hoosiers......they still suck!! Not even going to mention football.

Welcome.. Good story. Their is a lot of good infomation on this site you can search.

I am not in the Guard anymore, but boy do I miss being underway!! Yeah, Kodiak is awsome, I only got there once for about a week, I was TAD on the Acushnet. I was on the Naushon out of Ketch. Actually I just got back from Seward about 3 weeks ago, had a great time and put over 2000 miles on my buddies Alaskan Postal Jeep--a very cool rig, but I could not wait to get back home to my cruiser.

So I just got back from Amelia Island, FL where I spent my 1st anniversary weekend with my beautiful wife. We sayed at a bed and breakfast called the Fairbanks House, it was really nice. Why am I telling you guys about my anniversary? Because everyday I passed a driveway a few houses down, that displayed a bad ass FJ-40! It was kind of a choclate color, big ARB brush guard but w/o a winch, I am guessing 33's, chrome wheels. It was off 7th street in the historic area. If the owner is ever on this site, I just wanted to give him or her my thanks. All I could think about going in to the weekend was my cruiser back home, but after seeing that beauty on the island, it gave me my LC fix so I could concentrate on my wife and not get my ass kicked for talking to her about 3FE's and the benefits of Australian style mirrors!--Gotta go take a Public Relations exam that I did not study a lick for, catch you guys later--CB

Hang on to that FJ62, brotha...best rig on the road (well...off the road, too!).
Welcome to MUD - it will likely become your new favorite addiction!

Yeah man, it is totally a new addiction and is definitely distracting me from my studies, oh well. I don't see too many 62's on here--seems like most everybody has a 60. I love em too--just something about those round headlights, cooler original colors, and 5sp manual. Cheer me up, why do you like your 62 as opposed to a 60? For me it is the memories I have made in my own rig, and fuel injection. Still I have a 60 wish list--I wish I had maual door locks and windows, I wish I had round headlights, I wish I had a manual tranny. What do you think?

Def prefer the 3FE myself (I don't get along well w. carbs) and the auto is also preferred for around-town driving, though I do like shifting. Also like the shoulder belts ('89-'90) and electric locks.

Not much else was changed / better from 60 to 62 model, I would love to have round headlights on my 62.

My M-I-L lives down in Ocala, but have only been there once to visit. Will probably go down again this fall.

Congrats on the 1st anniversary! Working on year 28 myself....

Yeah, can't get away from those square headlights, makes me feel all icky like a own an old wrangler. Ocala is not bad, wish we had some altitude though, I love hills. --CB

welcome ... I remember bringin my 60 home with White walls and not scatches :D

HHmmm.... "must dos"... Let's see... Spring over axle conversion. 4.88s. Lockers. 36x12.5 TSLs. Bobbed quarter panels. Wrap aropund rear bumper, nerf bars and HD front bumper to match. Winch. Roof rack. Swing out tire and gas can carrier. Snorkel.
Shave the head, cam it, free breathing exhaust, reprogam the ECU.

That'll do for starters. ;)

Mark...

That's all, Mark?

Don't forget roof top tent, upgraded stereo (preferably marine speakers), George's LED dome light, aux reverse light(s), CB/Ham, little patch of carpet to keep the keys from rattling, Tuffy Center Console, On board air (or was that included with the Lockers?).... and most important of all:

fix any and all rust immediately before it gets worse.

Welcome to MUD, college boy. As you can see, there is no destination, only a journey.
