We headed up 138 to the 173 and up the mountain towards Arrowhead. Snow was really really icy. It was either hard packed, slippery or you were falling through losing traction. Wasn't like last year AT ALL. Last year was fluffy and we drove anywhere we wanted. It was basically fresh powder. This year we had to work to get anywhere. The 80 broke trail. We made it further than anyone else yesterday. Had to winch out a FJcruiser and push a RAV4. Other than that everything was un-eventful. Fun times.. on with the pics..

Northbound I-15 looking at Baldy.

Heading up the 173

Once on top of the mountain the 173 turns back into pavement from dirt. Notice the dividing yellow line.

Our first stop of the day. A couple thinking they can take their RAV4 anywhere. Even with chains they couldn't get around this corner. We pushed them back onto the road and advised them to head back down. They listened to us.

Proceeding onward. Notice, no tracks out in front.

Dixie trying to figure out what the hell we are doing out here. (her first time in snow)

Yosh's first time sledding.

My buddy and his WJ. His first time snow wheelin.

About 6 miles in we hit Willow Creek Jeep trail. .. about 1/4 mile into the trail we hit this grade. There was no way to get past it without chains.

So we jumped back down the hills and proceeded into the valley more towards Arrowhead.

We stopped for lunch and sledding just before the gun range.

Dixie again, trying to figure out why the hell we would want to get out in this crap. She ended up having a blast.

My absolute favorite pic of the trip..

After lunch we had some fun.

Mr. Toads wild ride

After playing in the snow for a good hour we noticed the next storm approaching. So we decided that we wouldn't push any further but rather head back down the mtn.

Beautiful Rocks covered in white.

On the way down we passed a FJcruiser that was on his way up. He was all alone. We advised him of how far we got and that another storm was on its way. He proceeded on after we passed him. 10 minutes later we got a call on the CB that he was stuck and needed help. We turned around and winched him back online.

Needless to say he followed us down after that. lol

Nice little waterfall on the way back down the mtn.

That's about it.. nothing too eventful. Our plan was to make our way over to a buddies cabin in Fawnskin, which would have been nearly impossible. I'll post all this on the website.

Nice work Dave! Wish I couldve been in that side of SoCal yesterday.:frown:
Ive come to the conclusion that the Los Padres NP people dont believe in citizens enjoying the snow.

alan, come on up if you can get past CHP:rolleyes:

Ok.
I just threw that statement out there. ;)
But understandable with all the City Folks with 50 or less series tires with shiny rims out on the loose near the mountains!
I saw alot of vehicles that wouldve been a gold mine for tow extraction!

Great pics Dave. I agree on the favorite, gotta love that Boston face, I am a little biased though. :D

I have to admit I am really jealous, I want to get Scotty and Tillie out in the snow. I am the one to blame for not making it happen but you and Reid are inspiring me to get off my ass am make it happen. ;p

Nice pics Dave, fun day. Any idea who the FJ Cruiser driver was? Just curious how he got himself in that situation? Obviously no winch on board, eh? Looks like he has the stock Bridgestone Dualers on steelies too. He was lucky you guys happened by.

Looks like you had a ton of fun. I wish I'd thought of bringing sleds when I took the kids out.

SNOW IS FUN.

Looks like you had fun and did a couple of good turns as well. Were you a boy scout in a former life?

I asked him if was on this board or any others, he said nope. He didn't even know he had a tow hook. He had a HAM radio antenna on the rig and didn't even know what it was.. 2 meter / 440? what? he didn't have a clue. Yeah the rig is stock, except for some light bar on the front. He said , he needed to find more people like us to wheel with. I told him to go on the web. He got lucky, he scanned the CB until he heard us talking. Then he asked if we were the guys that just passed him.

Funny thing is, i bought that sled at Chevron/138 on the way out! LOL

Never a boy scout, im just always cautious and use a ton of common sense. The 10 years of doing it helps too i guess? I know what we are capable of and what we are not. I think ahead also. Cant say im as wise as people doing it for 20-30-40 years but i guess i pay attention to folk who know.

Looks like we made it about halfway to Arrowhead.

You don't carry WD 40 in your rig? Spray that sled down....

Ours is "A Christmas Story". Well actually, it mine. My wife hates that movie.

Sorry for getting off topic. No sleds in Christmas Story.
