Looks like the paper tag says 0. Does that mean stock height?

On your spring in the picture it looks like there is a paper tag on the 2nd coil from the top.

Can you clean that enough to see what it says? If it's what I think it is there should be a number on it. That number can be translated pretty easily to identify what lift height you're at. That will help figure out what size shock you need. You might need to use your phone camera to see if the number is somewhere your eyes can't get to.

I suppose you could just go with shocks from the medium lift kits that are around. It would probably be a safe bet. That spring number would just dial it in though.

To avoid future harassment use the correct term, this is a shock or damper, not a strut. Good luck withgetting it sorted out, you are in the right place.
 
If you measure from the ground to the wheel well, mention your tire size, we can probably figure it out. But I really do think that if all you want is what you described, assuming your springs are good, any shock from a medium lift would take care of you.

Someone mentioned the stock shock can handle up to 2.5" of lift just with less travel (the wheel won't drop as far when it articulates), so this should be easy.
 
I don’t see the zero. I do see the old man emu logo. So you have a lift or a stock height replacement spring. This failure would not surprise me if a lift spring was used with a stock height shock as it would be the constant limiting device and when over cycled prone to fail.

Clean the tag or post a measurement from ctr of hub to bottom of wheel arch. That will help determine lift if any.

Gotcha I thought it was a 0. I found it and ripped it off. It was on the other side and says OME 860

I run the 2.5" lift springs on 33" tires and mine doesn't look nearly that tall. It's crazy they tried to run not only a stock length shock on that but one of the cheapest shocks made. It looks to me like it might have coil spacers on it too with that height? Your mounting plates look fine. Replace with the appropriate length off-road capable shock. Several brands to choose from currently.

How do I tell if there are coil spacers? All I see are the bump stops? If that's what they're called?
 
Look for a ring around the top of the coil spring. Here's a picture from Man A Fre's site

Go to www.cruiserteq.com and look up shocks for an 80 series.

You can get the OME version, but do not get the heavier set, as they ride very stiff.
 
FYI, if there's a lift on the truck (taller coils than stock), you'll need a longer than stock shock.

If it's not lifted, then the standard OEM Tokico shocks available from the dealer are a decent and cost-effective solution if it's the shock. As was already noted, if the shock mounting is damaged, then you've got bigger problems.

I'm looking at the tokico shocks since I won't be going off-roading or major rock crawling anytime soon.

I saw these two part numbers:
48511-69186
48531-69265

However when I searched for shocks in the search bar at Norwalk Toyota, I found these two additional part numbers which are also say fit the 1992 but are different part number and different in price:
48531-69286
48531-69417

Can anyone let me know what the difference is between these two?
 
I had the same problem with new rancho shocks.

My jdm came already with rancho shocks installed. I have ordered the same exact rancho shocks and refreshed all 4 of em. I figured that if i'd replace them by the same exact rancho shocks, all would be fine.
Well 3 days after installing these new shocks, i gave the truck a test drive at higher speed on a forest road. Took some good bump and also got the wheels to almost lift up. The rear suspension bottomed-upward a few times ! I had done a lot of work on the truck and i wanted any bugs to show up.

So, heard clunking, and realized that i broke a brand new Rancho 5000.
Rear right shock broken.
Broke the 16mm rod right out of the shock and bent everything. Luckily no other damage to the truck.
Measured for lift, turns out the truck has a 50mm 2inch lift (Springs only). I knew ranchos were cheap and i found out. Anyway, i was very disapointed with the truck's feel after installing those ranchos. The ride wasn't comfortable at all. I had to re-install one of the old ranchos to replace the broken one.

Now i'm worried other shocks on the truck could break at any time. Is it the cheap ranchos or is it the 2inch lift ? I may never know.

I'm ordering bilstein B8 5100.
Cheap guy pays twice.
