I got my inner axle separated from the birf, also got the snap ring to take 2 spines off the axle at the same time. Can I still reuse my axle or do I need a new one now?

Med,

Is there are "wear" indicatons on the splines themselves?

If it is the spline teeth on the outside of the cir-clip, then yes, you can still use the axle with minimal concerns. This can happen, since this is the weakest point of the splines due to the stress riser created by the groove for the cir-clip. The small "stub" portion of the spline isn't really experience much force, since it is not in contact with the birfield star splines.

Yeah... I can't imagine that's a problem if the major splines are in good shape. Although I didn't take my birf apart, I doubt those end splines really even engage anything. Probably just there to be able to feed the axle through the star and hold the snap ring from popping off. Be interested to here one of the birf seperator gurus chime in, whose study the inners up close... Raven??

One way to look at it is that the splines usually do not break when removiing the birfield. I suppose one possibility is that the snap ring got wedged in an unusual manner during dissassembly. Another possibility is that your axle splines are not as robust as usual. If that were the case, replacing the shaft wouldn't be a bad idea. I recall that the pricing on the front drive shafts is fairly reasonable.

I do not recall individual prices off the top o' me mellon this morning and I can't look them up as I am home but the pair nets out to board members at just over 200 dollars.

Old thread, but Ive run into a similar issue here. Long side popped off in two hits inside pvc pipe. Short side is kicking my ass. I have beaten up a piece of 2x4 in the process and mangled both the pvc pipe end and a piece of steel pipe. The short side will not come loose. These things are impressively strong.

Makes me wonder what is going wrong, mine popped of with two hits using the pipe method.
Is the pipe against a good solid anvil (concreate floor or a block of steel) or are you doing this over gravel, or with the pipe held in a vice?

Short side axle is much lighter than long side. May take a much bigger shock to pop it off. I use steel pipe with shop rag stuffed into bottom. Slam it hard into cement you don't care about. Gotta git pretty mad at it, sometimes.

I got mad at it for sure. Decided to stop before things went airborn! Ha.... It is inside a steel pipe, also tried the pvc conduit that got the long side off with two hits. Certainly seems like the weight of the long side helps, but I am hitting the concrete slab so hard with the steel pipe it is chipping the concrete! Something has got ahold of the birf REALLY WELL....unless the PO welded it on the short side?? I have not given up, but wow. I am going to try the steel pip with rag in bottom on a 3/4" steel plate on the concrete next.

Beno and l fought a short side for several hours when we were in Japan. We finally gave up and got a new inner axle shaft. A Birfield replacement was already planned anyway.

Update: I reused the short inner axle, it is still running fine 18 years later. I have done many birf jobs and this is the only stubborn one.

Sweet success! Amazing how strong that 40 year old spring pin was. Steel plate with steel pipe for the win. Not sure about that one tooth? For some reason the short side birf looks newer than the long side.

Too many speed holes in your steel pipe maybe?!

Just clean up the burred end with a file.
It's the long part of the spline that does the work. The short end bit is just providing a groove for the clip, it doesn't engage with anything
