So when you remove the hose off the top of the PCV valve you see smoke?

I would think some smoke is normal and the more you see is a sign of high crankcase pressure due to bad rings.

Yes i still see smoke when the hose is removed. Well the smoke comes thru the breather hole on the valve cover near the fire wall.

Yeah that is also from the crankcase.Does your cruiser burn a lot of oil? I would do a compression test if you haven't done one and see where your engine stands.

Yo, cruzer_89,

You be Omar,,,,flca ?

I be Pete, flca....

If its pumping a lot of smoke you are building a lot of crank case pressure this is usually a sign of blow by a condition caused by worn rings. Its not that tough to re ring a 2F just don't forget to deglaze and rehone the cylinders. Not a bad time to use the ridge reamer too. Kind of a poormans rebuild.

Yo Pete, what's happening? Yeah it's me just trying to get some feed back on this smoke thing you and i talked about...

Thanks for the advice NorcalFJ60 and Dynosoar. I'll get that compression test done.

You've got blowby in one or more cylinders. I get oil out the pcv on my 3FE. The engine was rebuilt ~4 years ago but I didn't find the problem until a year ago. The compression is good (>145 on all cylinders) but leakdown shows the #5 cylinder has 10-20% leakage (tested with two different machines) and the air comes up out the pushrods.

Despite this the engine runs very strong and the two shops that I consulted with basically said to leave it alone (given that the rest of the engine is in good shape). To keep the oil out of the intake I installed a small oil separator in the PCV line (you can get a kit at http://www.steeda.com/store/-catalog/555-3710.htm). I empty it with every fill up. Kind of a pain but this way I have some time to hoard cash for the next rebuilt (which will be done right this time). Over the past ~7000 miles the quantity of oil that is collected (small, really just an ounce or so) has not changed.
