I received my eliminator pulley and air rail caps from fj40jim, and I am getting ready remove the smog air pump. I plan to completely desmog my FJ60 2F motor, but I am doing it one system at a time, starting with removing the AI system. Here is my plan of attack:
  • Remove the air pump and air hoses, and install eliminator pulley.
  • Remove air rail and install plugs into the manifold.
  • Remove the ACV, Relief Valve, VSV 1, VSV 2, ABV, and ASV.
  • Cap the now vacant vacuum ports 6 and 10 ( for ABV and VSV 1) on the vacuum “cluster”.
  • On the Air Filter Housing, cap the two vacant air hose ports and the vacant port to the VSV 2.
Do I leave the VTV associated with this AI system, or remove and cap it?

Also, please chime in and let me know if I am doing something wrong, or missing something.
Thanks.

That vtv gets removed. I would take it out with the metal spagetti and not just cap it. The re routing of vac lines does not take long and would be worth the effort to do right away.

What you are about to do is the biggest part of the Desmog. You should consider going the whole 9 yards. If you order all the replacement vaccum hoses first and do some research on "My Desmog Thread" you could probably kock it out over the weekend.

Just my opinion. Good Luck

Thanks for the replies. I will remove and cap the VTV.

I plan on doing the entire desmog process, but just one system at a time, so I can easier isolate any issues that may come up. Once I have it totally desmogged and running smoothly, I will remove that metal tubing vacuum cluster.

I did it in reverse order. I took off everything and then rebuilt the systems I need.

Now that she's complete, I get TONS of power, pick-up, and great gas mileage.

Either way you do it, GOOD LUCK. Always feel free to ask for advice. Also, as perviously stated, read "My Desmog Thread" and you will have visual references and lots of questions asked by others.

if you just remove the intake hose and the overflow reservoir its easy to pull it out with a little turning and twisting

Thank you. I was looking at it, thinking I might have to remove power steering pump to pull it out.

Also, is there a non-permanent way to cap off the tube leading to the exhaust? I have read about welding a cap on there, but I want to be able to reinstall all the smog equipment again if I move somewhere where it is tested.
I was thinking of maybe even leaving the air rail on the manifold, and just using a universal "smog hose" (if I can find the right size), that I could use to run from the air rail, to that tube leading down to the exhaust. Anybody try this, and if so, what type and size of hose do I use?

I would take the air rail off.

Just took mine off ten minutes ago, piece of cake. I'm leaving the injectors in the manifold though, and gonna cap 'em. One less thing I could **** up. I did have to chisel the farthest rear tube to get the coupler off though.

Sorry. This thread is a bit old...

Not a problem. All advice is welcome. :)

The air pump has been removed, and the eliminator pulley from JimC works great. I plan on removing the air rail when I get around to removing the carb for a rebuild.
