Is a smog pump from a 62 much different from a smog pump from a 60?

Big sur, I found a siezed 60 smog pump..

I think there are three options when dealing with a smog pump (collective wisdom)

1. gut yours and run a shell

2. buy a rebuild from NAPA or other and chance it.

3. Bend over, take it like bitch, and buy and OEM pump.

I gutted mine...

HEY Fish....................very hard to gut or is it as easy as disassemble and reassemble?

One of the differences in the pumps is the elbows bolted to the back of it. Different elbows direct the hoses in diefferent directions. You should be able to use the elbows from the old pump if the new pump has the wrong ones.

Gutting the pump... Its an option for those who don't have smog testing. Its pretty easy. You can also grease the rear bearing while you're in there.

Well I definitely have to smog mine but..................

My pump sounds like a coffee can full of BBs and I can't have it sieze on me....

I'm gonna do a V8 swap soon(hopefully next spring/summer) and don't wanna buy a new one..........

I've got registration due in Dec so I should get the notice soon(Cali's notice is about 60 days ahead). If I don't haveta smog this year then I'll gut it..........

If yours is gonna sieze soon, but you don't want to replace it (due to the swap) but still have to pass smog, you have another option...

The AC belt can be run around the main/water/alt pullys. Only run one belt. That way you save the air pump. Then reinstall the belts in the correct way before you go in for testing.

Yeah 60 that's what I was thinkin' too............

Thanks for the info Doug...........I got my 60 in Seattle

Kirkland actually...........

Is there a Costco in Kirkland?

Well got the bad news in the mail yesterday..............

DMV renewal came.....................

"Smog Inspection at a Test Only Station required"

Aawwwwwwwwwwww crap.............

I'll go next week and give it a try..............

So I go to the Smog Station today to try and smog it before the pump goes bad......................

and the EFFFING pump siezes while it's on the smog dyno!!!!!!
pulley falls off and lands on the underpan.........

Ha HA HA HAHA HA HA HA AH HAHA HA HAH HAHAHA :crybaby:

Man, similar thing happened to me when I went to register my 40 - pull up to test station and the pump siezes as the guy is walking up.

We look in the engine compartment and he says , sorry man, you need the air pump.

The crappy thing was I went to one e-test place and their probe was bad, so I had to drive across town to test. At every stop light I could hear it getting louder...

The thing that bugs me the most is I wanted to get it past the smog so I could gut the pump and make it until I do the V8 swap(I already have a brand new pump with the V8) next spring/summer

So be it

I gutted mine and it still passes emissions here in Utah, and it still looks like it's there, so i don't get hassled about it.

My pulley actually fell off the pump shaft so I had to get another one. Got it from Napa and it works great now

$$ bye bye (better spent elsewhere)

Got a picture!

Hi Big Sur -

I just got a smog pump (off eBay) from an '85 FJ60, so I thought I'd post a picture hoping it helps you find some answers.

I need a pump for my FJ40, and I grabbed this one at a great price thinking it might work for me. It's HUGE, and the mounting bracket is a different size. I'm gonna put this one up in the "parts for sale" area.
