So, after some research (and the fact that power steering fluid was, in fact, leaking onto the smog pump at one time) it's probably a good possiblity that my smog pump is what is making that aweful noise. So, the question remains, how/with what do I replace it? There are so many options, from used ($100) to rebuilt ($200-300) to aftermarket ($200) to brand-spanking new($1000?!?!?!?!?!?). Any feelings on aftermarket or used smog pumps? Any sage advice for the replacement of it? (damn, I'd love to de-smog the durn thing, but round San Diego, the CHPs like to sit on the side fo the highway in the summer and pull unsuspecting people over to check the smog on their vehicles... 'specially if you're driving a pimped out off-roader :D ).

Any help would be much appreciated... (woman on the edge here... okay, not really...)

the conensus seems to be finding a rebuilt OEM unit- a hefty chunk of change, but worth the reliability. Make sure that your existing PS pump is good, or you'll be doing this repair again. Getting the old one out, and the new one in is a bit of a PITA, but not too bad. You have to take out the PS pump to get the smog pump out (I have left the PS lines attached and just moved it out of the way) I have an aftermarket smog pump that I put in knowing that I'll probably have to replace it later (couldn't afford the OEM one) and it's not too noisy, but I know that the OEM is better. TMI? sorry, rant over.

I would find a used toyota one or buy one from Napa. I have changed it a few times and have never taken the power steering pump out. I think I took off the PS pump pulley.

OEM is almost unobtainably expensive. I like new stuff, but th's a crazy price. I have had good luck with the NAPA rebuilds-they cost like $75. The one in my 40 has been there for 4 years and so far is OK. It will be a sad day when the one in my 60 goes south because that will be a tough decision.

How does one know whether the smog pump is not working? I have a fj62 that sometiems makes a high whining sound. It comes and goes..not sure?

Go with the Napa Part

You can get it in 1 day and they do last. Do you need one that will last 20 years? I will say it is a PITA to change them out and I did not remove the PS pump or bracket only a little skin from my nuckles.

There's a test in the emissions manual (for the FJ60) that measures the discharger pressure using a special tool (pressure gauge with flow oriface) at specified RPM. Whining sounds like a bearing starting to go.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I recently had all my belts off and was spinning the pulley, it sound like something was clicking inside...is this a bad sign?

Normally you should not hear a clicking.Just the veins dragging around inside the pump.

A easy check is with the cruiser running to pull the intake of the pump on the front of the air cleaner and feel the suction.

It should be able to pick up a 10lbs bowling ball. Not really.. but if you rev the engine with one hand it should increase the suction.
