I recently bought another 1992 fj80 (no comments from the peanut gallery) when I got it home no oil on the dipstick. I know; who was the the dipstick that didn't check the oil before I bought it. Anyway it runs great and is in really good condition with 169k miles the owner told me they didn't even know how to put it in 4wheel drive. So when I drained the oil it was like black water. After changing the oil, plugs, rotor, cap, air filter and fuel injector cleaner, it didn't pass califrornia smog.:bang: The HC's was 206 should be 120 max, the CO's were 2.70 and max should have been 1.00. AND THE NEW OIL SMELLS REALLY REALLY BAD. Is there a way to flush the soil system clean, and would this cause it to not pass smog? My other 1992 80 was beat to*@!**8 but passed smog with flying colors. The under carriage was beat to **** thats why I grabbed this one because it never saw the dirt from two owners. OK lets have it, sock it to me, give me all ya got, bring it on.:deadhorse:

im not real big on the oil flush treatments... but if you are going that route its cheaper to buy a gallon of diesel fuel and pour about a quart into the oil... then run it for a few minutes while watching the temp.... you dont want to run it for to long... although i have in the past driven the vehicle for a few minutes....

might also check the dashpot that its still working and is adjusted properly....

so when you say bad smelling... what kinda of smell? gasoline?

how many miles on the engine? was it sitting for a period of time? give us more info on the truck. how does the exhaust look? smog equipment rusted? have holes in it? all vacuum hoses ok? I would just replace those anyway as its pretty cheap...

A good flush I use is adding a cup of WD-40 to the oil before the oil change. Drive around for 5 minutes or so and do the oil change. Works great.

Pour a can of seafoam in the crankcase, let it idle for 20 min, then change the oil with a good quality oil. ie: mobil 1, rotella, delo.

You can also suck it through the pcv valve and let it sit for 30min, then go drive the hell out of it for a few min to clean out the valves and intake manifold.

I'm having the same smog test issues with my '92 80. My mechanic/friend took it into his shop and found some rust holes near the o2 sensors. We're going to plug the holes and try testing it again and see if that does it.

Mine has 153,000 miles and the engine is smooth and quiet, only considerable rust is on the exhaust system.

Now my check engine light came on today. Jumped the pins and got a 25/26 error code which is telling me that air-fuel mixture is lean/rich. Which one? o2 sensors?

Yup, 25 and 26 together is the typical O2-sensors-need-replacing code.

Don't skimp on these. Buy OEM. CDan can get you a pair cheaper than the dealer.
