i got a diesel fj40 with 33x9.5 bfg alt skinnies and plan on doing some month long expeditions taking the back trails through mex and down further south and don't want to get stuck in the middle of bfe. thinking of getting a winch with a receiver attachment so i can pull it out of the cab and use up front or back depending on need. lighter is better. . also suggestions of dependable brands/ models (yes there will be water crossings). thank you Mud brothers for your experienced advice. I'm not going to get into the debate over model because that can run away fast.

But - I'd go with at least a 8,000 lb winch with a 9,000 lb winch being better. Bring a block too. Your 40 by itself won't be too heavy but when it is outfitted and then stuck deep in mud you'll want the extra power.

I'd rethink putting the winch on a receiver hitch. Moving it around will be a PITA and getting in into a receiver might not always be possible if you are buried. Ease of theft is something else to think about.

thanks for the insight so go with a 8ooo or bigger. also theft is why I was thinking of keeping it inside. I can picture walking out of a hor- tel in the morning and my $1,500 winch it gone. Also what do you do if you need tobe pull out going backward.? Yeh I saw the video on how to use multiple bolcks with a front winch, but lets be real its not like the trees will always be positioned just right for that.

i would get put a quality winch in the front with a winch extension permanently and put a lower quality winch on a hitch plate and place that in your truck. its true that it's not always possible to stick the winch in the hitch in certain situations.

THIS!!

I never liked the idea of a hitch mounted winch for the same reasons :o

As for pulling backwards, my answer was pretty simple ;)

Hi All:

For the sort of solo trips you are speaking of reliability is the most important consideration.

I would go for a 8 or 9K electric winch from a name brand, like Warn, Ramsey, or Superwinch.

The Warn M8274 is the "grandaddy" of electric recovery winches, but there are plenty of other models that are up to the task.

Good luck!

Alan

Makes sense thanks for the feed back. genius pure genius why try to work with one which when you really need two. I like the idea of the quality winch up front and say a less expensive mabe smaller unit in the rear. I like the rear bumper winch install in snake eaters rig. Very clean. I have an auxiliary tank in the rear that won't allow for that but....it's got me thinking about bolting one on under the tire carrier. Hummm

I've actually found that my toughest pulls are self recovery from deep mud and usually from the rear because there aren't any attachment points in front of me, so I put the EP9.0 up front and the big Husky10 out back

And even with a winch bumper, there's way more room out back for a larger winch than the front :) (once the spare is removed of course)

ok so dont skimp front or rear. great help thanks. anyone have a pic of a fj40 with rear mount winch?

I made a skid plate to mount the winch on the rear. The front of the skid plate attaches to the rear shock absorber crossover tube with D rings, which allows the mounting plate to pivot down for serviceing.
