I've been chasing this for a while. It's a somewhat slight knock into first year. From any gear, if I put it into drive, it instantly moves into gear and knocks a bit. I can feel it, but it's pretty quiet. There is not a slight delay when putting into gear like most other automatic cars have. When I put it into reverse, there's a slight delay (from all other gears), and it shifts normally. Second, third, and fourth gears are all completely normal. The part that's taken me a long time to sniff out is that it does this same behavior when slowing down at a red light or coming to a stop, and it felt like a clunk. It does not make this noise when coming to a stop when out of gear in neutral. I am 100% sure it's on the drivetrain.

Things I've done: throttle cable adjustment, u joint replaced, been through the entire suspension system, not in the wheels, engine and trans mounts look good

Things I suspect: solenoids, kickdown cable

Does anyone have any other ideas on what it could be? Am I on the right path? Or is this normal for an a343f f1z 80 transmission?

Are your slip yokes greased and sliding in/out freely? I once had a 4Runner with symptoms similar to what you are describing and it was a sticky slip yoke.

Are you talking about the propellor shaft splines? Yes, they're greased. Also when I am moving, and put it into neutral, and then brake to a stop, there's no clunk at all. Which leads me to believe that it's related to the rough shift into first, rather than compression of the slip yokes. Agree?
