Does anyone run an awning on the rear of the 200 that deploys without interference with the spoiler in the upper hatch door open position?

I don't want a full size awning on the side, just a small one I can cook under at the back or get out of the sun or rain.

Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Something like this is what I had in my head: Overland Vehicle Systems 4.5 Foot Nomadic Roof Rack Vehicle 600D Poly Cotton Awning with Aluminum Frame and Weatherproof Storage Cover, Dark Gray https://a.co/d/2BCwOVy

A traditional awning seems impractical with my setup. Maybe one of those tent things like you posted above would work? I don't ebven know what to google for to find one though...

At one point I made an awning for the rear of my Tacoma that might work in your situation. It was a 6x8' nylon tarp from REI that my wife sewed heavy duty velcro tabs to one end to attach to the rack bars. Then I used a set of Kelty Tarp Poles for the other end. It worked great to provide shade/light rain protection. Heavy pooling rain was too much for the velcro, but a different attachment method would surely work. Tie off required, in this pic I was using a long kayak

Yes! I love this. Thank you.

I have this Kelty Waypoint tarp. It's great in that it's compact, light and relatively easy to setup.

Don't have any pics, but I find it's flexibility to be it's best feature. So often, the car is not parked in an ideal facing, or the sun angle is at a different time of day, that I want the awning a spot other than what a fixed awning would provide.

I've been debating whether I want a fixed awning because they are pretty cool in the right scenario.

We have a smalll camper with two 180 degree (OVS) fixed awnings which are great for the intended purpose, but I just want something small so I can get shelter/shade when using the 200 without a camper. There were several times in a recent trip (including while at Prospector during LCDC) where we just wanted a little bit of respite from the sun, and there wasn't really any place to go. This is intended to close that gap.

I'm warming up to the idea of a portable tarp/shelter that we could move from the rear to the side (or even to some trees) if the conditions warranted.

Something I rigged up with a tarp, some poles I found at EMS, string, stakes. I made a bar that bolts to the roof rack rails out of a piece of scrap maple I had. I've since added hooks on the front corners of the tarp that hook under the rear quarters above the tires with bungies, they are padded so they don't scratch the paint.

Yes, I can open the hatch and it doesn't cause any issues.

Yes! Maybe I can make one out of things I already have around the garage?!

it's basically what's been posted above Charles and the other DIY's. No complains works well for me at the beach.

More details...

Hooks I made with some scrap metal and bungies. Padding inside the hooks is peel-and-stick foam weatherstripping.

Brackets I made with some angle steel, the SS bolts go into bar stock that was tapped and slides into the roof rails. You have to pop off the plastic covers to get access, but it's easy. Like everything I do, they are way overbuilt and overthought.

How the maple cross bar bolts to the brackets...

The crossbar is about 5' long, and has several coats of poly for weather proofing. I don't leave it up there, it does howl a little on the highway.

I epoxied SS carriage bolts into the crossbar at the locations of the grommets in the tarp. Wingnuts and a big fender washer make attachment very easy.

a 3/8" carriage bolt also slide right into the OEM roof rack rail.

I ended up going with the Kelty. I'll report back after I get a chance to use it.

I hava a Rhino-Rack Rear Dome 1300; the rear hatch clears fine when it's up. The awning is attached to the back of my Frontrunner roof rack.

Picture of my waypoint tarp. I love it. Flexible, lightweight, easy to setup for the most part and I can move them from vehicle to vehicle.

I have a Noah’s tarp 12 by Kelty and it is a great piece of gear, but can be a chore to get set up. The thing is huge. I do tend to set up a base camp and it being able to stay in place can be valuable..

I will be picking up a waypoint tomorrow and will see if it can remain in place without the vehicle with some use of the Noah’s poles and additional guy lines..

Found a review for the SJK Gear Roadhouse tarp and lots of pictures in a 4Runner forum.

When I was searching, I ran across another option that might work better for using both standalone and on a vehicle: Roadhouse Tarp - https://sjkgear.com/roadhouse-tarp/

I went with the Kelty though, since I've had good luck with them over the years.
