could someone try and explain to me what the torque converter is and it's function. Thanks.

The torque converter is a fluid coupler / clutch, which allows the transfer of power from the engine to the transmission.

The TConvertor housing is attached to the flywheel, which houses a turbine & pump and encloses the stator. The finned pump section uses the force of the fluid against the finned turbine section, which is connected to the transmission. This causes the transmission to spin, and the stator in the converter is used to force the fluid back into the pump section at the appropriate speed / direction. The transfer of powers uses centrifigal forces, fluid striking the finned sections at appropriate angles, and returning fluid flow direction is controlled, etc.

is it safe to say that this mechanisim is what allows that push sometimes when going down a hill? Kinda like the tranny pushes into the next gear?
