While I was researching what other people have done for sleeping platforms in the back of their 80 series, I noticed a lot of pictures of builds. Many people asked for dimensions or drawings, but it seemed no one really made any.

So I'm sharing my blueprints for the way I've decided to go. I've also included the scribe template for the right and left sides as 1:1 prints, but this is only correct if you have the same height as the 10 3/4" I decided to go with (it leaves the right compartment available and doesn't disturb the factory speaker, as well as makes it even with the folded down passenger seats).

I'm not quite done with the build (only have the box and drawer so far). I haven't decided on how I'm going to prop up the left and right sides, but practically anything would work.

I hope this can be useful to someone.

EDIT: I should clarify that this is for a 1993 Land Cruiser HDJ81. I think most J80s are the same, but I'm no expert, so you're on your own.

This is great! If I was looking for a shop to build this for me, what type of shop should I be looking for? Cabinet shop?

I would think a cabinet shop would probably be your best bet, but I think it would be expensive. I dunno, maybe worth it. I have access to a cnc router at work, so I made use of a lot of dados and rabbets. You could easily simplify it by eliminating them and cutting everything with a table saw (and the contoured cuts with a patterned line and jigsaw.

Actually, the cabinet shop that shares space with my company fits out Sprinters into #vanlife, but it's a $90k Sprinter and another $80k by the cabinet shop to outfit it.

I know this is an old post but I just wanted to say thanks for posting this! I used it as a base for my build I finished yesterday. I made some changes but it was a great place to start.

Thanks @stusic for the shared plans, I just handed off the plans to a carpenter friend who is making me a supply list and then off to the hardware store I go to gather supplies for him to build. He loves his beer and homecooked meals so I plan to be his assistant in this project and get a storage/sleep platform in my '94 fzj80! Sooo excited for this project and that he is not going to charge me an arm and a leg to have it made!

I'm planning on using the third-row seat bolt holes to anker it to the cruiser.

Question, I am planning on leaving my second-row seats out for the most part, has anyone created a frame or legs to hold the piece that would go over the second row? Curious if anyone has ideas, we are brainstorming that part. The more storage space available the better.

I did it! This is where we are today and we will be adding carpet today or tomorrow. So excited to have this project wrapping up!
Thanks @stusic for your plans and thank you @84T4R for your adjustments/ideas. I appreciate the shared information…

Got the side cubbies to work.

Used existing bolt holes to anchor the box down.

We decided to build two boxes for the second row. We did not hinge the top pieces, yet. We’ll see if the cubbies with side access from rear doors will satisfy us.

Anchored the front of the big box using existing bold holes and we decided to use the nubs for the carpet to secure the box to as well.

Here we used the second row seat bolt holes to secure the two smaller boxes for second row area.

Nice long open storage where the second row seats would go.

Going to be adding sound deadening mats soon.

I want to hinge the two but for now we will keep the secure.

No drawers, yet, maybe maybe not.

Nice! I heard slides take up alot of space....So for now, its just two tunnels with access ports at the tailgate?

Yes, exactly, and the tailgate will be the door for the storage ‘tunnels’
