Some time ago, Bro Rob told me how the skunks on Mt. Graham were very friendly. I didn't really believe him. I was wrong!
I'm finding that skunks are not at all bashful. They will do whatever they want! I went out to my truck in my driveway a bit ago, and there was a little critter with a really big tail hanging out there. She was thinking about having a nap or a nest in my truck. She stomped her feet, and put up her tail, then decided that I was too big to fight with. She left. I got a pack of smokes out of the truck.
This is common. Skunks are everywhere here. My dogs were skunked the other night, and we were not happy! Neither were the dogs.:eek:
Our pups are learning, and so are we. Bright lights help.
Peppe Le peu is alive and well!

While camping a few years ago near west clear creek in an area frequented by campers, the guys and I were sitting up late around the camp fire when a skunk sauntered up and walked in, under, and around our camp chairs looking for a handout or just checking us out...we remained still and watched in amusement. It finally wandered off after a while. It seemed to have the attitude of that old saying:

"what does a skunk do when it wanders into camp? Whatever it wants!"

This thread stinks..

Back in the day of living in a mobile home, I remember sleeping in the shop after the fights broke out under the house.

Howdy! Our family used to go up to Lynx Lake campgrounds a lot. Whole families of skunks would parade around the camp sites just about dark. They were real good at tearing open garbage bags searching for food. I even had one go under the floor of the tent in the middle of the night, hunting for dog food that the dog had knocked out of his bowl. I was awaken by my pillow wiggling around. When I finally figured out what was going on, I just sat up and let the skunk finish his snack. I have heard that you can "lead" them by making a trail of little apple chunks. I have also had some luck using moth balls as a barrier around camp. It was always lots of fun watching the Green Horn Campers scream and lock themselves in their cars to be safe from the little stinkers. John

I woke up late one night, on Mt Graham, to see a skunk looking thru the screen of my tent, about a foot from my face. I watched him for a while and he watched me. I finally flicked him in the nose and he left.

We have also had a skunk trot right up to our fire on Mt Graham.

The Myth buster show tried to get a skunk to spray to test what will remove the smell...they tried eveything and could not get the skunk to spray.

They always stink when you run them over!

Knoxville did it on Jackass (the show) . I couldn't stop laughing.

Waxing isn't so bad. The sharp pain is over quick while the 2nd day itch from shaving lasts and lasts.

Skunks are pretty much normal here, as are coyotes and pronghorn antelope. They are all in our yard.
I went out to the truck to restock benedril and smokes the other night. There was a little one, less than 6" long. She had a tail 18" tall, and she was mostly all white. She was kind of cute. She had the slightest of black stripes on her. She was all upset about my showing up. She was just as mad as could be! She went off about 15 feet and then she turned to face me. She chattered at me and got mad! She scolded me hard for disturbing her! She was a pretty little critter, but damn, was she pissed off!
One of our Bengals ran into a Coyote. I feel sorry for the dog. Angelo came away with a damaged left front leg. He came home with a lot of coyote fur under his claws. He tore the hell out of that dawg! That coyote didn't know what hit him! Angelo has several bites on his arm, and the coyote has to heal from a lot of hurt.
Usually, when a coyote gets a cat, it is over. But not so with a Bengal! Angelo beat the hell out of the coyote. I heard the dog outside that night. He was not happy! The coyote was pretty much getting his ass kicked. The coyotes will be more careful around our hut from now on. Just wait till Collin gets a grip on one of the coyotes. He is a 20 lb Bengal leopard. Our coyotes are no more than 40 lbs. He will rip them up! He has come back several times with patches of skin shorn of fur. Every time, we have heard the howling of coyotes out back. Collin pisses then off! And he kicks their asses! He pretty much tells them to go away and get out of his yard!

I forgot to mention that Angelo is not as big or tough as Collin is. He beat up the coyote, but he came back with a mangled LF leg. He is sequestered and on antibiotics. His leg is pretty cut up.
Still, he got enough flesh & fur to convince the dawg to look for other food next time. Angelo's leg looks like it will recover. All the bones and tendons work OK. The rest looks a bit rough.

Weren't we going on about skunks? Sorry to sidetrack. I got home from the coast tonight and I've seen four so far. They wander along the creek on the north edge of my property. I just step out of the office and see them walking by. Usually, they are being stalked by one or more of my Bengals, giving them no reason to hurry, but a good reason not to raise kids here! The little leopards will take fresh baby skunk over dry kibble at any meal. The skunks are not stupid. They move on...
