This may sound like I don't take care of my truck, but like everyone here, I try to do my best to do whatever I can to maintain my ride. Anyways, I went to changed my oil yesterday and as I scooted myself back by the drain plug, I noticed that half of my transmission skid plate was ripped off. I mean clear cut across from the front where the middle skid plate starts to where the bolts were on the cross member. I tried to recall any times that it would have happened and nothing came to mind. So now, I'm trying to figure out if I need to replace or go on without one. But in thinking about it, I think I should replace it seeing as if the current one just ripped off without my knowledge. Any suggestions, should I get one or go without one? Also, if you guys have any suggestions on who to go, I'd appreciate it.

thanks in advance.

Yeah, I know they're far from being worthy of the term "skid" plates. I just didn't know what to call them. Maybe, transmission undercover?

I don't know your driving style or where you go. But, I would go with something (OEM or aftermarket). Obviously aftermarket will give better protection. But, you may not need that.

For aftermarket, look at Slee or BOIR. For OEM, contact cdan or beno here on mud.

Thanks for the information. I looked at the aftermarket option to see if I can upgrade, still deciding.

04UZJ100 - How long have you had it naked? Do you go off road at all? On occasion I go (not as hard core as some here), so leaving it naked may not be a good idea.

You may already have an upgrade to the OEM skids in your kitchen - check the drawer under the oven. Much beefier than the OEM stuff ;-)

Never and for 2 years since they basically rusted off. They were the only thing that rusted.

thanks for the input guys. Lol, I may have to scour for the cookie sheet somewhere other than our kitchen (it's a necessity for the kids). The price will definitely sway me one way or another. But if it has no purpose than to improve mpg, I may just go without one and just re-consider when I go off road.

My "plate" has broken in half as well.
We did a little water crossing, it was basically only wetting the tyres when the plastic was caught on something and broke.
I will replace all plates with something more decent. On my previous car Ihad 3mm steel plates all under it.

if you ever get high centered on that skid plate that protects the tranny you will be glad for the extra protection it does provide. While not as good as aftermarket skids...it is better than nothing and also better than the fiberglass version up front under engine....teetering on a sharp piece of granite and then having to drag yourself off....you will be glad for that piece of stamped metal. Trust me!

I would replace it with OEM or spend the extra cash and get full skids at this time.

"teetering on a sharp piece of granite"

That's a little scary. Scary enough for me to see about getting one. The problem I'm finding is that the aftermarket center piece has to be attached to the front or rear covers. So I'll have to get 2 pieces if I want to go with an aftermarket. I didn't budget for 2, so I may have to go another route, maybe even getting a local fabricator to make one. I'll see.

I like to go free style and let my junk all hang out!

My fiberglass is long gone. The factory ramp plate (front section) is not too bad for some protection and as a pre-warning system. I'm still wheeling, I just keep the trans cost on my mind when picking lines and so far so good.

I really need real plates to get on tougher trails and would be happy with either BIOR or SLEE when the budget allows. Both have done a nice job of engineering and I would be surprised if you could actually get close to the quality for less money on a 1 off job. Unless you have a bunch of 3/16 or 1/4 plate on hand an are building it yourself I would just wait until you can afford the good stuff.
