I have my '81 medium blue FJ40 in the shop getting a couple minor body issues repaired. They repainted the tub in two stage paint even though I requested single stage. And, I don't like the match....if you can call it that.

They said that you can no longer get single stage paint. Is this true? Anyone RECENTLY paint their truck in single stage?

Thanks in advance.

John

Most acrylic enamels are single stage and my truck was just painted in a urethane that had a clear in it. Single stage.

Are you saying your truck was painted base coat then clear coat?

Yes, when they repainted the tub they used a base and then a clear coat. It's now slightly brighter than the original single stage blue on the rest of the car.

The short answer is that they're lying to you and hoping that you buy it so they don't have to do any rework.

Single stage paint is definitely available.

I am curently repainting my rig with a single stage urethane. It will be a semi gloss-satin finish. Base coat clear coat will be full gloss... well depending on the clear coat.

I was confident they were lying, but wanted to make sure before I go in there and rip them a new one.

Thanks guys.

John

I actually did mine in the original enamel and thats available too.

I am going to paint mine in DuPont Nason. single stage urethane, paint is in the garage just need some time. How in the work can they tell you that it is not available anymore and expect you to not at least know how to use google.

There.s loads of place sell single stage paint. Maybe their supplier doesn.t sell it.

I painted mine with DuPont Nason about 10 years ago and my cruiser lives in the garage so it has had little exposure to the sun. I am not impressed with how the paint had held up( but then it was $50/gal) with out clearing it. You might want to go ahead and clear it if your cruiser sits outside. Either that or get to know your buffer really well.;)

Newbie question. Don't mean to hijack the thread. I am hopefully painting the 40 in the next month or two. I didn't even know this 1 stage vs. 2 stage option existed. Can someone elaborate? Or is this something I can get from FAQ section. If so, I will shut up and research it. Thanks

Single stage is basically a paint and clear in one. You don't need to put clear coats on the paint to protect the color coat.

Base coat / clear coat (dual stage) is a two part process. First you put the color coats down. Then you have to put down multiple coats of clear coat to protect the color coat.

I personally like single stage paints on cars/trucks that will be used as DD or trial rigs. PPG concept is a great paint and sprays really easy. However, the real secret is in the primer. For that I only use PPG DP-90 epoxy primer and the DP402 catalyst. That stuff will never allow rust to start...unless the primer gets scratched off somehow...

PPG:
CONCEPT® Acrylic Urethane ( DCC)

Premium quality, single-stage topcoat designed to offer exceptional gloss and color match. Available in solid and metallic colors.

Knowing exactly what you are going through, you will never get a 2-stage paint to look like the original paint jobs on these trucks - 2-stage paints are just too glossy
