Ok, I was getting tierd of not being able to see form the rear camera (considering I backed into someone in my own driveway!) Anyway. Here is what I decdied to do and it was simple, cheap and damn effective!

I decided drving around with two 5 gal Jerry cans is a bit overkill when in the cityish areas. So I put only one can on the outside holder.

Then with the help of my brother in law we went ahead and used a jigsaw to cut out the backing of one of the jerry hand holders. Not all the way, just to make it even with the front.

Here is the way it looked before:

Here is after:
Also note that we drilled two holes in the upper right a left to still use a lock and/or bungie cord with the can.

Here you can see the camera above the "N"

Now here is the view from the rear:

So that is also with the Tire on and a single jerry can.

Not perfect, but now I can see if there is anyone or anything behind me. Much cheaper and easier then trying to add another camera, use a new screen etc

Thoughts?

I was just thinking if you disconnect the camera harness, pull it out of the door and run it to the back bumper and maybe using the factory camera or installing an aftermarket one instead. But its just food for thought. I would've did what you did anyway haha.

Good Idea, but the camera is in the hatch, not the bottom gate. and runs through the roof liner......so you would have to extend wires etc.......looked at doing that, too much of a PITA.
:o

could always extend the wires and run it through the bumper and mount the camera on the spare tire, in the center. Slee did one like that and it's sweet.

I believe the new FJ Cruisers have a similar setup with the rearview cameras peaking through the spare. But like dtt255 said, its too much of a hassle.

I think this was a good solution, but, I still think it can be wired into the spoiler somehow. Not sure because I haven't taken the panelling off, but I think it would be above everything and give you a nice birds eye of what's behind you.

Either way, thanks for sharing, you guys nailed it with a quick fix solution.
