i'm thinking of repaint the "Jalopy" as the :princess: calls it. i love the flat/faded look of old 40s. however i also want to preserve my baby, and prevent rust. i am garaging it from nov - apr (kills me not being able to drive it). i was going to single stage, but was told i get more protection with two stage(clear coat). is this true? if so, is there a way to clear coat and still have that "faded/flat" look? i feel ignorant asking because common sense tells me no, but i had to ask. thanks.
 
I don't think so,

But if you want the flat look just wet sand your paint with 1500+ paper and dont buff it out or polish it.

Im painting my 60 right now, and when i get done with painting the panels and do the final sanding it looks ultra smooth but not reflective at all. I don't know how it would hold up that way though. You probably couldn't wax it, and water won't "bead up" on it when it's that way.

I've watched a couple hot rod shows and they used a "flat black" on a couple hot rods to give them that renegade look. So it's ceratinly possible.
 
so if i understand you correctly... using a satin clear coat will take away some of the shimmer, and still protect the paint under it. yeah?
 
the trouble with 5280hawk's suggestion is that the paint won't be sealed. i've had it in the garage all winter, but i just want to preserve as best i can. thank's for the imput/info

exactly.

I'd like to see the results of the satin clear coat method. do you leave the final coat of paint unpolished under the satin clear coat? or do you buff it?
