Here is a flat orange.

That looks pretty cool, I just wish the picture was bigger. I am thinking of doing an orangish color, but more of a dark, burnt orange like this:

Maybe a little darker and more of a copper tone. I don't know. Cool to see all of your pics though.

how do you guys just rattle can the body? do you remove panels and then paint or is it just tape off and spray? I am thinking I really like that flat khaki... but that OD green is pretty slick ;)

I'm with you. I'm digging the khaki and the OD green both. Thought I wanted to paint mine flat black or gunmetal grey. I already have some Dune Beige and rust on the outside, but all the interior paint (dash, etc.) is in great shape. I could do the flat khaki and not worry about painting the engine bay and interior dash, etc.

I'm really thinking that these trucks are not supposed to be glossy (no offense to those who have spent a lot on a fancy paint job). IMHO they just look "tougher" with the old school flat paint.

I agree 10000% the old flat look gives it a real hard ass kinda look ;)

I'll leave the gloss for the show room guys ;)

What about a flat khaki body with a mixture of flat khaki and oD green interior!! I think it would look good ;) that might be what I do! I have to do some engine work anyway... Might as well just pull the entire engine and paint everything in there real nice ;) maybe even paint the engine a nice OD green with the khaki on the engine bay haha I'm getting ahead of myself... But still :) that would be sick :)

It depends on the condition of your rig and what you want to do with it. If the sheet metal is satisfactory, mask and paint, if you need to stop rust........then do what you have to do. But, you must post pics when done:cheers:

My engine block is blue... I think someone has rebuilt it in the past... Not for sure what the factory color on the motor is, but a couple people on here have told me it looks like it's been rebuilt since it's painted blue...

rattlecan

I love the flat green rattlecan paint job on my 74 40. I took the softtop bows off last week alone and accidentally put a couple of huge scratches on the side. I simply scuffed the side with a scotch brite pad, wiped it with a damp rag and sprayed on 2 light coats

looks like new!!

go rattlecan and don't go back!!

I had originally purchased some Hot Rod Flat desert sand paint from TCP Global to paint my 40. Not sure if its true but, I then heard that the flat paint would allow water to pass thru and that it would rust from beneath. Is it necessary to seal the flat paint or is that just a problem with flat primers?
Keep the pictures coming.

Implement Orange

Hopefully here's some larger pictures, dustinuhls. I used a "brush" since I lay this thing on it's side occasionally. Easy way to make needed repairs.

I like it. The "drive shaft" bumper on the front is cool too. Good way to keep a spare and still be functional.

Say it with Krylon

Hey guys...I love the Flats....anybody have any good "how toos" or advise with rattle canning your own fj...I have been thinking about it but Im a big baby and fear the outcome of my efforts....

If my '79 doesn't sell in a couple weeks, I will be doing the wire brush clean and scuff, rattle can primer and rattle can final coat. If I need to do that every quarter I will. She ain't no beauty queen after all...

I am also planning on taking the white spokers off, having them sand blasted and painted with Tractor Supply "heavy duty farm implement" black paint.

No pics yet, but I second the Rustoleum Painter's Touch Oregano color. Currently being rattlecanned onto my 40.

Don't try to paint with temps higher than 90 deg. I decided to paint in July of last year, the coolest part of the day was around 3:00A.M. Glad I had time off from work when I did it. Also the primer I used was Rust-Oleum self etching primer. Almost looks black and covers bare metal well. With a dark primer coat, the color coat is easier to apply from the contrast.
One more thing, Tape the end of your "Trigger Finger", the indention from the spray can nozzle hurts like H#LL!!!!!!!!!!

I think I've decided to stick with the Dune Beige (or something similar in a rattle can). I'll need to go to my local Home Depot or Menards and see what selections they have in a similar color. I like the "Flat Khaki" pics people have posted, but kinda want something in a little darker shade that will still look ok without repainting my interior panels or engine bay. We'll see what I can come up with and post pics when I get it started. Any suggestions on a rattle can color like that would be much appreciated.

Rustoleum - Painters Touch spray can. Satin Fossil. ("Fossil" is the color)

I really like the color. It has gotten a bit lighter and less glossy over the last year and a half though, but I don't know if you can do much better with a spray can. It is quite a bit more durable than I expected and hasn't flaked or pealed at all.

Glad I rattle-canned it, the rig looks much better than before.
