Howdy.

Seeing MOTS great write-up installing shoulder belts for the rear seats in an 80 series has me wondering about the same type of project for the Prado to replace our lap belts. Before I go pulling trim and headliner to investigate, can anyone please offer words of wisdom?

I was thinking about using newer belts from a KZJ70 or similar - hopefully witht he help of someone overseas hint hint. I would really like to find those top anchor points in the pillar like MOT did, but since the Prado was made for Asain markets only I think, they might not be there?? Anyone?

Thanks,

I've seen several early 1990s Prados (Asian market versions) with the factory rear-seat seatbelts. But I haven't actually looked at the anchor points.

Hope this helps:

Cool. OK, that helps a bit thanks. For clarification, I should say I am trying to do this for the middle row of seats on a 1990 LJ78 4 dr.

I was looking for rear shoulder belts for my 74 and found through ICBC that there is a licenced seat belt installer in Chilliwack. It is called Sidewinders and I pretty sure that they wanted $300 for a pair installed. They do installs on vans, so they said it should not be a problem and the belt s are new not used.

I'd like to get my hands on one of those high mount brake lights from the Prado you posted.

Any ideas ?

Johnny,

Thanks for the compliment!

Before I even tore into the interior/fabric I could feel the hole that was to have the anchor point (above shoulders) with my fingertip (there were actually two or three holes of various sizes, but only one threaded).

It was a lot of work, but if somebody had shown me the ropes it would have taken me much less.

I hope yours will be less complicated than mine was, with all the threaded holes being present (which was the biggest pain in the butt).

Good luck and keep us posted!

I pulled the trim off on the second row of seats in the Prado. I only did these because I wouldn't likely put 3 point belts in the back anyway, as it barely gets used, and also, I never had the right tools to do the back at the time :grinpimp:

On the second row, there is a hole that appears to be unused. It isn't threaded, and I sure wouldn't trust bolting a belt to it, it's only one layer of sheet metal. It may be better than nothing, though. I'd say it's at about the right height for a shoulder belt to be mounted from. I was actually surprised the Prado body didn't have threaded mounts ready to go.

If you refer to my installation thread I had made a mistake of cutting a hole through the fabric where a non-threaded hole was a few inches below the threaded one. So, I'm sure you did, but you might want to "feel" for another (threaded) one somewhere above or below the one you've found, just to be safe.

Anyway, is the hole you found accessible from the back so you can put a nut/bolt in it to secure it at least? (Not sure if the sheet metal is thick enough to handle it, but if the hole is there ("IF" it were designed for the seatbelt, that is) then I would think it is designed to take it.

Good luck!

The hole isn't accessible from the back, but could be with some ingenuity. It's definately the only hole on the piller that could be used for a mount. As for integrity, I'd be careful.

Did your Prado have lapbelts in the rear?

I only had lap belts(bj60). doing a conversion to should with inertial reel. Had to cut in the body(interior) and weld a doubler. I have the mount at the top for upper swivel.

If you have a threaded hole in a piller and lap belts, you should be able to make something rather easily. Only problem is making a spot for the inertia reel in the side.

Also to note: there is a legality to making your own seatbelt structures. Or modifify from stock. Thats why they note the BC approved station.

I figured this could get out of my comfort zone. This is my kids safety afterall - it does have lap belts though. Not too thrilled about the single thin walled top pivot - (but THANKS for looking Adam!). The very back row must have a more solid mount though weekend here, more time to dig around. Pics provided by TEPui above imply this...

Brownbear did you say that you had the hole for the top swivel mount already in you BJ60? Just curious.

Thanks guys,

I'm going to give the truck a bit of a detail, so I'll pull out the tools and get a picture of both the pillar on the centre row, and the third.

If worse comes to worse, for some it might be an idea to throw belts in the back at least. I can't see myself doing this though.

On a related note, anyone know who's LJ78 was in Prince George yesterday? My dad spotted it downtown on 20th ave.. Had an aluminum basket safari rack, said it looked to be the two tone grey like so many are.

Both of my 7x-series have shoulder belts w/inertial reel in the bench seat rear. The hang exactly as Tepui's picture showed. In the 70, it is almost to the rear; however, in the 73, it is a good foot further forward.
