Should I just get an 80?

Thanks to Dan's comments in my earlier thread, I have since been adding the 80 in my search. This resulted in also considering a 100 series. I have found three rigs that would be well suited for my duties. The question is which one to go with. Which ever one I chose will only be driven a maximum of 3 years, at which point I will either keep it for wheeling or sell it.

The vehicles in question are:

1997 80 w/ 86,000 miles. Clean, w/ no lockers. Had a recent oil seal replaced on the engine due to leaking oil. No axle service, or HG replacement. $10,500

2000 100 series w/ 105,000 miles. Clean, with a possible exhaust leak, could just be the cat brackets rattling, I haven't driven it yet. $17,000 http://www.hardeeauto.com/ur/ur,,_t,,itemview,,itemid,,57905,,used-car,,Toyota_Land_Cruiser.ne.aspx

2001 Tacoma Xtra cab 4wd TRD w/ 107,000 miles. Has had the timing belt replaced along with waterpump and new belts 500 miles ago. $11,500. http://www.hardeeauto.com/ur/ur,,_t,,itemview,,itemid,,58176,,used-car,,Toyota_Tacoma.ne.aspx

I am also searching for a 03+ 4 runner 4wd with the V8 at auctions. They have recently been found for as low as $14,500 with 100,000 miles, but will probably go for closer to $16,000. Like this: http://www.hardeeauto.com/ur/ur,,_t,,itemview,,itemid,,57513,,used-car,,Toyota_4Runner.ne.aspx

I appreciate all your help in my search. I have been knee deep in my 40 for the last 3 years, so the only other Toyota I am familiar with is my old 2002 Dbl. Cab Tacoma.

That's a good price on the 100. Likely the rattle is cat brackets. Had the same thing. Annoying, but harmless.

The TLC looks like a good deal . . .

I have the same color in a 98 and I also have the 2000. If its a metalic throaty rattle on acceleration (0-35) , then it is likely the heatshield, which is a cheap fix by putting the bolt(s) back in or by using hoseclamps. The exhaust is another issue, and is a very different sound, which is a rapid ticking, easily heard when you lift the hood at idle and in park. (A dealer will say that sound is just valves) Costs about $1600 to replace both manifolds. The 2000 is notorious for the exhaust leak (ask me how I know)

Also, check to see if the T-Belt was replaced at 90k, when the water pump should have also been replaced, along with S-Belt. $800

Try taking it by toyota dealer for a check out and see if they will print out any service history toyota has on it. I always peek in the glove box for any evidence that may be left of service.

If you buy it, check out the tires. It should be on the second set by now, and nearing the end of life on those. Might I suggest 285's for a nice little lift?:bounce:

Those are the main areas of concern, otherwise it sounds like a great price on a great vehicle.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for the response so far guys, I like the extra towing and comfort of the 100 for driving. But at $6500 more, the 36 mo. payments are going to get steep. The 97' has less miles. more capable offroad, and will be alot lower payment. I can still tow with the 80, just not maybe able to tow my 40 up to the mountains.

To add vanity to the mix, black is my favorite color, and white is my least. The 80 is white, but I must say if I were ever to own a white vehicle. It would have to be a Landcruiser. I couldn't stomach anything else in white.

Do you guys thing that with only 3 years difference between the two rigs that the 80 will look dated and the 100 look new. Just thinking that there are a lot more 100's on the road, and people might look at the 80 as an old truck.

Jeremy

Thanks, I will let you know once I get pictures of the white one. It has half the miles, and costs less. But may be in worse condition than that one. Based on what others are telling they payed for theres, that Charleston rig is only worth $6500-$8500. Thanks for the heads up though. I tend to find that people in Charleston ask a lot more for there Landcruisers than other areas of the state. Not sure why. Maybe they all come with a lifetime supply of bluecrab meat or something. Ha,ha, just kiding.

Yeah...Charleston people tend to thing that Cruisers are made out of gold. :crybaby:

I bought my 80 almost completely built as you see it for less than 10k....be patient.

Thanks Dan, but I am not necessarily looking for a rig like yours. I want to drive it for work, not take it up Tellico, yet. It has to be nice and well maintained. Not saying yours isn't nice, just want one with original paint.

Jeremy

Right, but you can find cheaper if you look, all I am saying :)

Got it. I am not in any rush. I probably won't be moving for another month. I should be able to find a deal by then. I don't want to fly out and drive one back though. Time is scarce now with the new addition, and the wife back working. Let me know if you guys hear of anything. Anything the Confederate states would be an option. Don't want to travel any further than that.

Now it's time to get back to work on the 40. Just got my H41 from Cruiserparts, and it looks to be in great condition. Hopefully it won't grind or whine once I install it. They were sub-par to deal with. They shipped it out 1 1/2 weeks later than they said they would. I was just happy that the output shaft wasn't worn or that it had some oil in it and not sand. I have heard some horror stories on these Oz trannys.

Thanks for the help,
Jeremy

I would be happy to drive a truck back for you...always looking for an adventure! :)

I'll keep that in mind. There were some nicely modded rigs up for grabs over the past month. I noticed that white one that was just in TT for sale. Looks really sweet. Tired... something has it for sale. I think it is in Oregon though. That would be long drive.

Jeremy

Looks liek you are all over the place in what you are looking for. Each have there + and -.

Prices vary so much on these rigs as well. The Tacomas range from 6-7K up to 15K
- The 100's seem to be going back up in rice, I considered sellign the wifes 3rd gen 4runner and buying a 100 a year or so ago and found several in the 12-13K range with low miles. 80's prices seem to be up and down as well.

I wish you luck, but there is no way I would pay over 15K for a 100.

All the dealers that I have been talking to would disagree. They say that I am to narrow minded in my search. They keep showing me Sequioa's, Xterras, and Tahoes. I think narrowing it down to a 4wd Toyota narrows it down quite a bit. I am torn between the gas mileage and rear bed of a truck vs. the towing and comfort of an SUV. I am on the search for a V8 4 runner 4wd under 16k. This will give me towing, gas mileage, and comfort while still being capable offroad. Unless a nice well equiped 80 pops up under 10k, I will probably go this route. I will keep you guys posted. Again, please let me know if you see anything out there.
