should I go with 8" or 10" sub bracket...does either work well enough to bother?

Has anybody tried the Pioneer TS-WH500A?
If I had it to do again, I would have this or one of the similar offerings under my driver seat. No fuss, relatively inexpensive and enough bass for my needs.

I have the WHT 8” sub bracket. Not satisfied with the sound produced, I ended up dynamatting it and building a small sealed enclosure behind the sub cut out. A lot of work considering I bought the bracket looking for an easy solution.

The problem with just running an unboxed sub in that location is that it's not a suitable location for a free air sub (aka an "infinite baffle sub"). Free air subs require a baffle between the front and rear. What's behind doesn't need to be an enclosure of any particular volume (ie a car trunk) or shape but it does need to be separate from the front.

Aside from the all-in-one units, I think a pair of 6 1/2 or 6 3/4 subs built into a small sealed enclosure using the storage cubby as the sides and back could be an easy, decent sounding solution.

Finally......Somebody here gets this concept!

Also, the baffle/woofer mounting needs to be RIGID. (You shouldn't be able to flex it by hand)
 
To add some visuals to this thread, here is my WHT bracket with customizations applied: plywood enclosure for the sub, dynamat on the back side of the bracket, plywood face for the amp section for stiffening purposes, and some strategic use of "great stuff" foam and "big stretch" caulk for sealing and holding-things-together purposes. Sounds great but at least for me it was not a plug-n-play solution.

I had to build a box too, could hardly hear it just flapping in the wind. If I were to do it over I would go with an off the shelf, all in one unit, just my 2 cents.

I have the shallow mount box in mine and it is sturdy enough to stack on top without damaging the woofer as long as it isn't too many heavy items being bounced...

That'll take the "sub" right out of the subwoofer.

It was either build it or scrap it, I chose the latter. Its very punchy with a PDX-5, 150w @ 4ohms. The goal was minimal intrusion into the cargo area, goal met. The hardest part was isolating all the vibrations in the rear, i found that filling the void behind the box with closed cell foam made a world of difference. It tied the whole truck into the enclosure and the bass increased 10x while the rattle settled down.

first off - nice custom fiberglass sub....excellent idea to combine a slim box with a soft top curve.

can I ask - how thick the fiberglass is ????

also where did you put you amp ??? Under DS seat ?


my first though too was also it was super tiny....but then checked the specs -
Alpine SWR-T10 ? or 12 ? ( I believe this is your speaker) - only 3.5" mounting and .6ft3 :clap::clap::clap:


so lesson for today audio mudders - looking for stealth audio -

you can do a piece mail - used - ebay setup like baselfish or if you want to go top, top drawer - see superjuice :cheers:

Lol, I really just wanted to make it work. I purchased a cheaper pioneer first but it was a no go on a couple of fronts. The fiberglass is one layer of West Systems 9oz glass tape and 2 layers of resin over a sona tube, probably 1/4" thick if that. Clearance behind the sub is rediculous, the amps under the drivers seat, no head unit just Bluetooth.

I'd say my sub enclosure is roughly the same size, possibly a tad bigger. I took the easy way out and built mine using plywood, curved, without one side (the side closest to the outer sheetmetal). i used caulk and expanding foam to seal it up to the outer sheetmetal, so the body of the car effectively became one side of the enclosure. I'd say my enclosure amounted to just 0.2 cubic feet, which fortunately is enough for a lot of the shallow mount 8" subs. Like superjuice, I have foam, caulk, wood, dynamat and other things going on to keep things rigid and rattle free. When I first tried the bracket just bare as received from WHT, it was an absolute rattle fest and didn't sound too good (imo). No rattles or resonance vibes at all now.

Here is what the installed set up looks like with the panel on. I have an LX so I sourced a $6 speaker grille from parts express to open up the speaker area. That other round circle is a boat inspection hatch so I have a way to get to my Blue Sea fuse panel mounted to the WHT bracket.

Long story short: more work than I wanted, sounds great, happy with the result, would just do an all-in-one if I had it to do over again.

for the "uninitiated"....

he setup a 12" custom / sealed sub woofer - went 100% stealth - loosing no storage space. :cool::cool::cool:
he then went full separate amplification(5 channel) - FR, FL, FR, FL + Subwoofer.
this too is completely stealth - as he found a 5 channel amp that was both slim enough and short enough to fit un the DS :hillbilly::hillbilly::hillbilly:

indeed anyone can do a car audio setup - buy some amps - strap them to a board and place it in you trunk...
then make or buy a sub-box - put it in the trunk too -

poof.... now all you storage space is gone and next thing you know young punks be hawking your crusier and the
next thing you know - you come out to see your window smashed as some punk has jacked you over stealing all you gear....

I cannot stress enough - great job superjuice - and for all out there - this is indeed the definitive post on stealth sub / amp

etarasoff: [this in reference to the Pioneer TS-WH500A] ...that sounded like a perfect fix to me for some pain-free, moderate bass, but I chased down the dimensions and she won't fit: 14"x9.4"x3"--the 3" height fits tight floor to seat, but the 9.4" is a no go between the rails (the Kicker has the same dimensions). I don't know, headphones and a nice tube amp & let the passengers hum?
