Hi Guys,

I had my mechanic to pull out my transmission as the rig was leaking some oil between the transfer case and tranny. He found some gaskets that need replacing. While he was there, I also got him to check the clutch assembly since I just bought this rig recently and I don't know much about its service history...

Well, now he says the clutch disc, pressure plate and bearing need replacement as they are all worn-out. His shop is quite far from where I live so I can't inspect these parts right away (I probably wouldn't know much anyway). So I asked him to send me a pic and hope that you guys can give me some advise. And also more information about it would be handy (ie. is it a stock part, etc...)

What do you think? Should I go ahead with the replacement? TIA.

I wouldn't hesitate to change it. What is the condition of the flywheel? You may want to get that resurfaced as well. Make sure your use quality parts as replacements. (I am not sure if disc pictured is OEM or not)

It's enough of a hassle to drop your tranny, so you might as well do everything right.

The leaking between the transfercase (TC) and transmission (TR) is common with landcruisers. Personally if I was to drop the TR on my vehicle I would not do so just for that leak. You might be able to get away with installing an oil return kit to ensure you have enough gear oil in the TC and TR.

Now that you have dropped your tranny, you want to make sure you address everything that needs attention. Use the search function to answer any lingering questions you might have and make sure when you're cruiser is reassembled, it's done right.

if it is out replace it, because you will have to pull it all out again to change the clutch better to do it now, also make sure they machine the flywheel while there are at it

hows the rear main seal? Prob a good time to replace that too if you havent and all of that stuff is out of the truck already

I would hope the shop would only charges the cost of the parts and not much more, Since the trany is out already he should not charge the strandard labor for a clutch replacement.

I would 100% replace it if you already have it out.

Replace from rear seal back, resurface flywheel if not cracked,This is an aftermarket clutch on it now,I would go back with Toyota or Asian ,I like Toyota or Asian better. 2 cents Mike

I agree normal clutch price does not apply here because the tran.has already been pulled.Pulling the tran. is the most expensive part. Mike

thanks for all the tips... yes the shop will only charge for the clutch parts. service is covered by the tranny pull-out. i will have all the other things mentioned checked as well. i'd definitely go back to oem or aisin parts if possible.

Is no one here suspicious of the fact that the pic shows the throwout bearing already separated from the clutch hub?

Did he offer you pics of the flywheel?
Hub, where the clutch fork rides?
Fork, where the pivot ball rides?

Not saying you do or don't need a clutch. What I am saying is you don't have enough info to make a truly informed decision.

Best

Hi,

I assumed he has already disassembled all the clutch parts and only sent me one pic with all 3 parts that need to be replaced shown together (ie. clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing)...

I'll try to see if I can get some more. But thanks for the response.

Cheers!

Replace the clutch while it is out.

Replace throwout bearing and pilot bearing.

Replace rear main.

Resurface flywheel.

How is your oil pan gasket? If the mechanic is going to loosen the rear of your oil pan to help slide in the rear main and your oil pan gasket is leaking it will probably be cheaper to do that gasket now than later.

The list seems to be getting longer lol...
You might as well reco the motor while you're at it, or better still do a frame off restoration

Seriously though, I'd do all of the above too and not half the job.

well as the saying goes, "when it rains, it pours" or in my case, "when it leaks, MONEY pours"

Clutch and throwout bearing are already out per your pic. If you replace the clutch at least check your flywheel. If it looks bad its 6 bolts IIRC to pull it out.

If you replace the throwout bearing replace the pilot bearing (~$10 for the bearing or less). It is behind the clutch plate. If it goes bad you have to pull EVERYTHING out to replace a $10 or less part. A PITA - I had to do it once - once was enough.

The rear main is right there too. A OEM $50 part. If it goes bad later you have to pull everything out again.

Some people like to drop the oil pan a bit, or at least loosen it to replace the rear main. You can always replace the oil pan gasket later if you want without pulling everything out again.
