Hi,

My offroad trailer didn't come with shocks as I have seen some others that had them, what is every one's opinion? Is it necessary? Should I have them added? What are the benefits as no living thing will be riding back there.

mine doesnt have them but wish it did..
its bouncy when empty...... way too bouncy....
add them if you can

The benefits are things like eggs that are still whole when you get to camp and beer that you can drink immediately rather than having to wait for it to settle some before opening. Longer than typical trailer springs combined with shocks will make the whole trip more pleasant.

Thnx everyone, shock it is then!

Monroe has a great little trailer shock for the weight our trailers typically run.

Here is the Shock link

I've been following this thread because I'm having the same dilemma with my project. Thanks for the shock link Drew. Do you happen to have a pic of how you mounted them on your awesome trailer? I think we are running the same axle/spring combo.

Gas Magnums, I suspect that those would work very nicely on a trailer!

For a rubber torsion axle you can see what was done @ Vta 4x4 for the lower mount here:

Those are just a pair of the garden variety shock tabs welded onto the rear of the trailing arm. For leaf springs I'd suggest placing the lower mount as close to the wheel as is reasonably possible, and that they be within 10* of vertical if at all possible. Lay them over approaching 45* and there's no point in bothering as they'll have very little damping control

No pics yet. I mounted them using brackets that I bought at A&A Manufacturing. I think they were shock mounts for a Dana 60 axle.

New house doesn't have 220v in the garage yet so they are in a box waiting installation.

My trailer is currently back with the builder for fabrication for shocks and electric brakes. Also adding a 28 gallon aluminum food grade aluminum water tank under the belly and a sleuth of other modifications.... Should be ready in about a week. I am very excited.

That is one of the nicest utility trailers I've seen in a long time! Wow!

Hopefully get a chance to try them soon. I still gotta finish wiring up the lights and a few other things on my project....

Looks nice! You'll have to take it out wheeling with some of us some time. Got a camping trip coming up soon..... :hmm:

I didn't see...did you make those brackets or buy them? I'm building a trailer and I'm wanting to put shocks on mine too. Thanks!

I just fabbed them up. The shocks only come with one mounting bolt. I welded that bolt to a 1" square tube stand off and cut the lower mounting brackets from some steel plate.

Right on, great job...thanks!
