Interesting - so I replace the fuel sender (the round bit in later pictures) and figured I messed something up there to have a fuel leak... nope


worse is this doesn't clearly show where it's leaking

the worst is the corner - which didn't leak before

I have maybe 7 psi in the tank
so I used some sealant - mind you, if this doesn't work it means I must build a new tank.... crossing fingers and starting the new tank design


I may move the batteries to under the seat and the tank to the back.... I dunno, have some figuring to do.

I just spent some time watching videos on sway bars and chassis - and if the racers I saw are any indication of the 'common knowledge' within the 4x4 community - you folks scare the crap out of me. Just one example, using a sway bar to fix rear-steer issues is stupid. I'm an amateur at suspensions, but my goodness, there is a HUGE amount of misinformation out there. That said, I may be an amateur but I'm friends with the people who wrote the book on a number of types of racing - so they are literally just a phone call away. If you check the attitude, you'll find they are some of the best resources in the making your vehicle do what you want it to do.

let's start with some basics:
1) sway bars, shocks, tires, or brakes will not fix poorly designed suspension issues. On here I got grief talking about Instant Center - when I realized that the person I was talking to had absolutely no clue what IC means. Don't be that person.
2) proper suspension = traction on any surface.
3) go race cars before you go off-road. I did this backwards too, and the mistakes I made off-road initially were epic.
4) seriously, lose the attitude - we really are all in this together, but calling someone dumb, stupid or trashing on their build because you don't understand it is something that should be punished.... not made into moderators (and I'm not really talking about those here)
5) Get a good chassis book before you ever pick up a torch. Understand these terms: Roll center, Instant center, and suspension steering. Once you get that, you'll find that things like toe-in, camber, caster and valving are things you routinely change to make your vehicle handle for a specific course or type of surface - but only if you get RC, IC, and suspension steering right (and to be clear, you want some suspension steer because it makes you faster and more stable if you get it right).

So if you folks don't like my attitude, I honestly don't care - I built it, I wheel it, and outside of the internet jockeys, people really like what I build.

And it's not neener, it's boasting based upon ability. Get over it. Or don't be 12.

Sounds to me if you listened to your own advice you wouldn't get so much attitude in return. Just sayin....
 
Those shifters, or one of your own design are the only modification needed. You should have independent range control for hi/lo and F/R. I believe there is a pin that should lockout F hi, the np205 does.

attitude by people who don't know what the hell they're talking about... who needs them? Yet here you are - what did you just add to this?

Wishing I could have gone to Naches this weekend with Don and company... but the fuel smell is not fixed. I temped it enough to work until I build another tank - but I still have to get a PS cooler before I do anything else off road. I keep hesitating on the size. I'm seriously considering using a transmission cooler rather then the cute, litle PS coolers that are available.
 
A bit of tech. I did the plug-fix on my a/c compressor so that it doesn't blow as much oil into the air lines. The first time I used it, I got quite a bit of oil in the separator. I ran a vent off the a/c pump thinking perhaps that I was pressurizing the case and forcing oil past the rings - seems that fixed the oil issue. There was no oil in the separator after filling for 12psi to 30psi on my 38s. It also refilled faster....

since the fuel leak is fixed, I can wash it


of course, after the fix, now the gauge doesn't work.... sigh... that said, I didn't check it after I wired the lights so something could have been knocked loose. Tested the connection and terminals at the tank and it seems fine

No idea why the clutch worked fine then didn't. it was 2 things. first was the nut loosened on the clutch rod, but the second

the line ran too close to the exhaust.... hot fluid expands... clutch works with difficulty. This should resolve it and fix an issue with the wires being too close. Good thing I'd wrapped the wires otherwise this would have been a bit more involved

and limit straps



before someone jumps on about the strap not being tight, the suspension isn't at full droop because the springs hold the axle before that point.... if the warranty didn't require it, I probably would have left the rear axle without straps.
 
I'd like to see how you did that next trail run.

I am repaired and ready to head out again. Thinking wagon trail.

kind of frustrating day.... starting to get a migraine so I went to do quiet stuff on the '40. So first step was get it off the lift then whip it around so I could start on the fuel sender problem... and the idler pulley (the non-ribbed) is squeaking again. Add to that the exhaust leak I thought I'd fixed .... isn't. So headache, exhaust leak and squeek.... there are days when God is saying "nope, not tonight."

In other news there's a new leak on the bottom of the radiator.... fortunately it's something to do with the hose - though for the life of me I don't know why it'd start now. New hose, didn't leak before....

Oh, and another on Ih8mud was right about the shifter.... inner knob is rear axle control, passenger side is front axle control.... interesting. I think the '40 is starting to get this sense that I'm about fed up with its issues and I'm going to beat it soon.... and I know, I build a show car then beat the living snot out of it. Cool, ain't it?
 
Steve - Naches would be cool, Elbe - they're doing a wheeling with warriors run that would be a kick too. I'm on the fringe (meaning I don't do this often) of a group that takes out our warriors wheeling. Though I don't know how I'll handle it since I've taken my H3 every other time so there were neat Hummer-related conversations.... Now I'm just driving some stinking import ;)

I am working Saturday at 7 am. Should take an hour or two at most. Sunday not so sure. Physical moves that will take until 1 or 2. My co-worker is on the hook for them, but I am the only one in the group with physical access and experience. My boss may tap me for the work. I am hoping NOT. Time for my co-workers to step up and get their hands dirty.
