obligatory picture from the day of wheeling

no other pictures survived... it's just a nasty rumor started by the FJ40 guy that the next set of pictures would have shown the same H3 with its mirror knocked off buried up to its headlights getting pulled out by the aforementioned FJ40.

it was a good day to underscore why I'm building my '40 like I am. Every choice - ground clearance, narrow wheelbase, minimal stretching, tight turning radius (which, truthfully is a bit abysmal but unavoidable with the other constraints), and a place for Buick.... sigh, there was damage beside a mirror (which I've already bought in bulk), Fred (the heep in the prior picture) hit a stick somewhere (ironically, after the day of wheeling and pounding) on the highway, put a hole in his transmission pan. Hopefully, it's just a repair and the tow home... but I've done this to another rig and it was a new-transmission event... crossing fingers there.

And Buick, sprained (going to vet now) or something his rear leg.... I have no idea the mechanism of injury - but I suspect that the flat seat in back he managed to get his leg under the seat.... which is why I'm going to do something different on the FJ40 then originally planned... behind me will be a safe space for him.... and that will probably change the box I originally planned.... stay tuned :)

What? The wiper housing isn't all purdy and painted? Did you tear yours down to clean and lube it?

I finally got my park switch adjusted. I think. I was hoping for rain on our trip so I could test out the wipers. They work fine on short tests, but don't know about after it heats up.

Looking good mate love the safe under the seat I might have to borrow that idea

Anyway, beside it being a smokey beast, I did get a bit accomplished.
springs 150# and 250# lowers.... 200/300 was suggested as a starting point, I bought a set of 200s, that got me close, and it settled into pretty close. This is right on... in defense of the supplier, it's hella hard to guess what spring rates you need the first time especially when that guess was 2000 miles away... he was close, very close (50# high)

I still need to set the lower spring stop, but at least now it's bolted in place.... and I drove it  it works awesome

and there's the height I wanted
now to fix the high-idle, the oil leak from the timing cover, narrowing in on it.

the oil leak - I figured I'd save money by using this timing cover... ah well, but it brings up that I started this build as semi-economical then decided to go whole-hog, it bugs me to have this motor in this vehicle because I should have simply bought a new motor.... that said, the oil smoke is acting like a vacuum leak from the intake (too high of idle, smoke from both sides in equal amount, I've been party to the broken oil ring or failure-to-seat issue and it never smokes equally.... maybe this time, but doubtful)

anyway, it is road worthy-a bit smoky but it drives - now comes the long part of dialing it in.

go back and forth on bracing it. at this moment, I'm not too worried about it because it's not even with the winch fairlead.... if anything I'm thinking something that slopes from the very front and raises whatever the object is that wishes to impale... with that said, the order of events is fix the vacuum leak, finish the dash insert, then go wheel this.... I'm beyond ready to go

It really isn't likely you will hit something hard enough to matter. Those are supposed to help a lot in the event of a roll-over and in that event it would be stronger if braced.

I have wheeled with guys who went from leaves to linked. All said they never rolled when on leaves, but often did after linking. I suspect they were pushing harder though. Not saying you will push it that hard...
