My driver's side seat shifts side to side (left and right) sometimes when turning corners. PO might have been a hoss, but I got a scrawny butt - so that ain't it. "Seat of the pants" measurement is that it's moving about 1/8-1/4 inch, but it's enough to get real annoying real quick.

I checked all the bolts where it is attached to the floor. They were tight, and I gave them all a good tug with the wrench just to be sure.

Anybody have this problem and/or know the fix? Got a new baby at home and would like to know what I'm doing before I take the time out to disassemble the seat.

Edit: 1997 model with leather

Doc,
Cute lil dude you got there.

The 4 14mm bolts work their way loose on mine all the time. About every 4 mos I get the wrench and tighten them up again. I should just use loctite on them, but can't find it in the garage :whoops:

Sounds like the seat is moving on the seat rails, vs the seat frame moving on the floor. There's a long threaded jack screw that moves the seat and therefore holds its position. I've pulled my driver's seat before just to lube the jack screw and the gear it threads in. Fairly simple. You may have a damaged one from something getting caught in it that now has a bit of slack.

Doug, you don't off-hand know the size of the screw and thread do you? Is it ACME thread? Maybe I'll try to clean mine up. Probably got an old cheeseburger down there or something.

Junk,
Thanks for the compliment. :D

Doug,
Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. That sort of mechanism doesn't look easy to troubleshoot, nor does it look like the parts would be readily available (CDan, correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm guessing if I do figure out the exact cause, there will have to be some sort of hillbilly rig to fix it. If so, I'll be happy to share pictures. :D

If there is play fore and aft play then the lead screws are a good place to start but I'd look at the 2 bolts that hold the nut bracket to the rail first. You can see those bolts from the side of the chair. However you mentioned side to side, I'd think it's more in the tilt mechanism that raises and lowers the front and back. If this was loose then possibly you would get the side to side. I've altered my chairs for another 2" of travel and can't see where the lead screws would give you that side to side play you're talking about.

Seems like with that kind of play, there's got to be a loose screw somewhere. I think there is a "very" small amount of movement/play in the seat (the butt part of it) just in the pins that anchor it to the track. I was getting a irrotating rattling noise out of my pasanger seat from vibration. Couldn't find anything loose, just the aformentioned play. Fixed it by tilting the seat (butt part) forward a little bit.

Congrats on the addition.

Thanks all,

I went on a 5 hour trip today, mostly interstate driving. This was the first prolonged trip I've taken in this beast, so I needed to do some significant adjusting of the seat position to make it comfortable for a long haul. I'm hoping that the chages I made today will make the shifting go away. I'll report back after a few days of city driving.

So did anyone ever find a fix for this? Because yes, I have a case of shifty seat. To say it's annoying, is being nice.

Jack

I guess I'll have to poke around and see if there is something obvious.
