Shifter Knob Removal (1 Viewer)

Okay, I feel like an idiot and searched to no avail. I need to install a new shifter boot in my 77. How does the knob come off? Is a compression fit or threaded? Mine looks like this. It will spin but it doesn't raise off of the lever. The knob looks like a replacement and the bits below look somewhat buggered up.

Looks to me that the ball is JB Welded to a fitting. Use a wrench that fits the fitting and unscrew the fitting lefty loosely. Or try and pry up the shift pattern plate with a little screwdriver under the edge, then un screw what is under it.

Looks like a bend outwards to clear switches on a aftermarket console. The piece below the knob looks hex shape. I would use a wrench on that and install a new knob.

I was able to loosen the nut, the rod is threaded. New boot and all is well.

The knob has a nylon insert that is threaded. It must have been stripped and this was a PO for repair versus replacing it.

I think so. As long as it doesn't come off in my hand, I'm going to call it good for now
