shift plates

So I'm looking at getting some new glove box door shift plates made.

I'll get one for the SWB with a 3 speed auto and twin stick and one with a 4 speed auto with a dash shifted h/l and pull knob 4wd. Might get a 4 speed auto with twin stick too for a possible upgrade in the SWB to a 4L80E from the TH400. I suspect the cost will be about the same for an aluminum sheet with 3 images instead of two.

My question for the group concerns the text.

I could, of course, go stock wording. I think I would at least modify it for the AWD transfer case on the LV, but keep the same writing style.

Or I could do the JDM plate in Kanji. That would be pretty cool. Anybody got one they could scan?

Or I could do something unique.

Any opinions or suggestions for text?

1st hurdle handled - It's katakana, not kanji on the JDM plates.

I used a translator and figured out the characters. Our graphics teacher is working up the artwork and he got me a printer who can do it. I forget the process he wants to use, but it's not screen printing.

I was thinking about having a custom one made as well, but like tornado, mine will likely be different too, but I am hoping to learn what process you use.

Not true. While many of the words on the plate in the left and middle sections are in katakana, like 'transmission' (トランスミッション), 'transfer' (トランスファー), 'Front Drive Knob' (フロントドライブノブ), etc., the instructions on the right side of the tag are in the usual mix of hiragana and kanji, with a sprinkling of katakana.

That makes sense. I couldn't figure out the left and middle sections until I tried the katakana translator.

I'll try kanji and hiragana characters for the the instructions.

Well, if you want a perfect translation of what the JDM spec. plate says, all you need to do is look at the English language version of the same plate. It doesn't say anything any different in Japanese.

You will find all of the online translation devices poor to abysmally poor when it comes to Japanese-English or English-Japanese.

I'd go for custom content to suit gearbox pattern etc and in the original style English font as unfortunately I not speak the Japanese! And don't time have to learn!

A stock looking custom shift pattern plate would be sweet!

I wonder if Toyota ever did an Arabic version? They certainly exported plenty of trucks to Arabic-speaking countries.

I like the idea of doing it in Japanese. It's a Japanese truck and nobody ever reads those things anyway.

If I was going to have to do it in English I might have to slip in something about what range to be in in case of zombie apocalypse or something just in case someone actually read it.
