Safeco’s appraisal of Project Snowball ❄️.
I did not agree to this value, the comps were nothing comparable. They rushed to get this settled. My agent sent me this,
APPRAISAL
A. If we and you do not agree on the amount of loss, then an appraisal of the loss may be made. However, both parties must agree to appraisal and to be bound by results of that appraisal. In this event, each party will select a competent appraiser. The two appraisers will select an umpire. The appraisers will state separately the actual cash value and the amount of loss. If they fail to agree, they will submit their differences to the umpire. A decision agreed to by any two will be binding.
Each party will: 1. Pay its chosen appraiser; and 2. Bear the expenses of the appraisal and umpire equally. However, we will reimburse you for the reasonable appraisal costs if the final appraisal decision is greater than the amount of our last offer prior to incurring appraisal costs.
B. We do not waive any of our rights under this policy by agreeing to an appraisal
and decided to hire a 3rd party appraiser.

So I hired Ken Nix at Leverage Auto Appraisals. I paid $750 to him. This was a long drawn out process… taking months… I thought it was a scam. But each time I called he assured me he was getting the highest value he could on Project Snowball ❄️. He was having a difficult time dealing with Safeco’s appraisers. He said the company they chose does hundreds of appraisals a month vs him who does 15-30. He used Bring A Trailer to do his research and put Snowball ❄️ in the $30-$40,000 range. Safeco was in the $19,000-$22,000 range. They were slowly working towards one another. Well after months Ken asked me what I was good with as they were looking like they’d need to go to an umpire. He asked if I’d be willing to take $24,000. We yesterday I got an email confirming $24,000. Also because this second appraisal is higher than Safeco’s first appraisal, I get the $750 back from Safeco.

So know I am wondering about what to do. Safeco estimated the value of Snowball ❄️ low to avoid repairing the vehicle which they estimated at $22,572.28.

I chose to retain my Landcruiser right away and thankfully it was taken directly to my dads vs a holding yard. They sent me a $14,091.10 choosing to retain the vehicle. I told my agent this was unacceptable and she then gave me the option for the 3rd party appraisal.
Well now that I got $24,000 value and they sent a lower cost for repair $22,572.28 I feel that Safeco repairs my Landcruiser since value has been deemed higher than the cost to repair. As it stand now I have a damaged vehicle and lost $4,000 choosing to retain the vehicle in the time being waiting for this 3rd party appraisal. I have talked to an attorney who deals with this and because the value was higher than estimated repairs he said Safeco should have the vehicle repaired.
Anyhow this is a first for me and not sure if anybody has more information on this. I have learned a lot.
