Anyone have any good recipes for this? I used the one from Americas Test Kitchen, it was great. Highly recommended.

Used my 12" cast for cooking, it was an excellent dish, one I'll definitely be doing again.

I think key to the dish was using very lean ground beef, to avoid too much greese while it was cooking in the oven.

No recipe per se...but I make mine with cubed lamb or beef steak instead of burger. I do have a shepherd's pie recipe that swaps white mashed potato top for mashed sweet potato top that grabbed my attention...haven't tried it yet but since you jogged my memory I may just try it sooner than later!

And shepherd's pie would be equally home on the trail...using DO or a Coleman stove top oven to reheat/bake.

Shepard pie has always been a leftover dish for me. Chop up whatever leftover meat and veggies you have maybe add some onion and spices, mix in gravy. Throw it in a baking dish and top with mashed taters, bake it until it's hot. I've used pot roast, pork loin, and turkey, whatever you have.

I really like Gordon Ramsey's version of shepherds pie, only make it with lamb mince (drain excess fat) give the mince a hard and hot fry in the skillet to develop some "bark" and add a bit of nutmeg too and an extra dash of Worcester sauce. His version calls for a couple of egg yolks in the mash, it really sets up the crust nicely and adds some richness.

Long time lurker here in the cuisine section and gotta say you are a gastronomically impressive bunch! Had to get off the fence though wrt shepherds pie, it was a staple as a kid growing up on sheep farm in Aus.

Great to meet ya, mate. Thanks for stopping in to our little universe.

I've never had good shepherds pie. I haven't sought it out, though, so maybe I'm missing out. British pubs and British families have all left me unsatisfied. Just always seemed like leftovers thrown together that should have been thrown out. I figured that the stereotype of their food was right on that one. Maybe more butter and bacon in the potatoes?!?!?! And bacon fat.
