hey

So in case some of you don’t know. I bought a 2004 lx460 with 220,000 KM’s on it last week. Had some small issues like headlight working and then not working and then working etc. Very annoying. The pipes connected to the muffler have cracks in the welds and are leaking lots of water. Otherwise it’s good.

Anyways the previous owner told me it needs a service done very soon. So I’m having a hard time figuring out what I should get done.

I plan on getting the engine oil/filter changed. Previous owner would put in regular oil. I was thinking about using syenthic. Is that ok? And also should I be using some special syenthic oil for high mileage?

Also wondering if I should do the
Brake fluid
Rear diff fluid
Transmission fluid
Transfer case fluid
Active height control fluid
And replace wheel bearing/driveshaft bushing grease?

The fluids above were supposedly recommended to the previous owner by Lexus but he never got them done because he thought Lexus was just trying to upsell him and have him pay for more etc.

Anyways since it’s gonna be my first service I wanna do a good job and just looking for advice on what you all would do.

Thanks.

Baseline/replace ALL fluids for peace of mind. All are DIY jobs. Change heater t's (probably THE most important thing to do and a cheap DIY job). Synthetic is no issue. I run Mobil1 products (5w/30 high mileage synthetic oil and 75w/90 LSD gear oil).

Everything you listed you should do in addition to the items Gary mentioned. All fluids, grease everything, new wheel bearings, air filter, etc.

Sorry I don’t understand what you mean by change heater t’s?

Thanks

What about the timing belt and water pump? Were they replaced?

Adjust the neutral pressures of the AHC.

Also check if the spark plugs were replaced. They are due, if never replaced.

Sorry forgot to mention.

The timing belt and pump were changed 50k ago

There are 2 of them and they are the achilles heel of the 100 series cruisers. They decay over time and when they break, ALL of your coolant exits the vehicle and you can blow an engine. They are about $7 each from any Toyota dealer and should be one of the first things swapped out. They are located near the top of the firewall on the drivers side. There are 3 hoses attached to each of them. TONS of info on this site about how to change them. Here's just one:

Heater T’s Real Time help needed

Also, get a grease gun and make sure to grease the U-joints on the drive shafts (there are 4 total - one on each end of each drive shaft). You should re-grease them every 3-4k IMHO. Super easy 5 minute job.

Thanks for the info.

Seems like it’s something easy to do which I can do in my own personal garage. The rest seems kinda complicated. I’ve only ever done engine oil changes on my old car but never done transmission/brake/rear diff/active height fluids.

I’ll google this more and hopefully come across some videos on how to do.

You will be fine with conventional oil. You could run synthetic if you want a longer oil change interval. Iridium plugs Denzo good price on amazon.

Oil and AHC fluid changes on these rigs are ridiculously easy. For the oil, use conventional or synthetic (doesn't really matter). Oil drain plug is just aft of the front diff cross member. For the filter, remove the oval plate (2 screws) on the front skid plate. Filter unscrews and has a drip lip. Screw on a new filter and screw back in the drain plug. Pour in 7.2 qts of 5w-30 and call it a day. Easy.

Penzoil Ultra Platinum on sale at Cdn Tire right now. One of the better oils you can buy. Mobil 1 is always cheaper (than other places that sell oil) at Walmart in Canada.

Check amazon.ca for plugs but id order from that site I sent you in PM. You really need to double check amazon.ca prices. Unlike the US. Some things are a good price and others are very expensive. Double check gap.

Yep. I’ll check out that site. Someone else also recommended rockauto. I’ll compare prices on both.

What do you mean check gap?
