As many of you know, my 97 is badged as a 40th, but isn't a 40th (and wasn't represented as one when I bought it). As I was passing time sitting in traffic yesterday, I noticed that the dash plaque has a serial number on it. Got to thinking about this, wondered how the Toyota parts department (there's your tech, Junk -- it's a part....) can ethically sell these things. Seems to me that the serial number on the plaque would be associated with a specific truck, and my specific truck shouldn't be associated with any 40th anniversary serial number. Is the serial number on dash plaques sold over the counter generic?

Hasta,

could it have come from another 80? like one in a bone yard or something? or maybe during a test drive the # plate just happened to jump into someone pocket.

whas the number on yours? moms is 3000ish

I asked my parts guy, he said he would have to call Torance and ask.......I said don't bother ;)

how fitting...........40th and 40........

My number is 2,100-ish. I'm too lazy to go look. :)

I could ask the previous owner but he's probably sick of my silly questions. No, make that definitely.... I think he said he bought it all at the dealer. That's what got me to thinking.

40th and 40.... now how do you know that?!

Well mr birthdayboy, it's time to fess up. You added that plaque cause you wanted to be more like me :flipoff2:

Someone probably snagged it off another 80 at some point. Maybe someone was going to pawn it off as a 40th - ya never know.

I don't blame the previous owner. I'd be sick of you too. Heck, I am, but figured everyone else on the planet is too so I'd toss a bone and respond to your post :flipoff2:

Happy frickin bday sucka. :flipoff2:

Thanks, I think....

Sick of me or not, I just asked him. :) And he bought it off lease from Toyota, and added the badges just because he liked them, nothing more to it than that. He's as standup a guy as you'd meet (well, I'd meet, standup guys avoid you!).

When are you coming down here?

TJK

:D yup, most do avoid me.

Was going to be there this week, but heading to UK tonight. May be down towards end of the month, will let you know so you can pretend to be busy :D

OK, plaque and the side decals came through a friend of a friend deal via Toyota in the LA port. Body side molding the previous owner bought from the dealer.

So I don't know if you could buy these plaques from the dealer or not. Suspect not.

TJK

Actually you can. Have seen Cdan post them up before :D Not sure, but I think they were blank, although the emblems are definitely available. Personally, I've been in the process of peeling all mine off. A little chisel here and some there and they are coming off ok. :D

A blank 40th Anniversary Edition dash plaque. How exactly do you identify that...? ;)

Replacement 40th dash plaques were blank where the number goes (they are now discontinued). I have one and have posted a pic in the past. If you got one from someone at the port with a number on it I bet somebody in the office was pissed when it came up missing :flipoff2: . The plaque numbers do not match up with a particular vin but there is likely a real one floating around out of sequence........Of course it is possible that they had a few extras laying around and that's how you got lucky.

Word is that 4,000 plaques were produced by Toyota USA, but not that many actual 40th trucks by Toyota. True?

TJK

Could be, I would not be surprised if they made a numbered run that large. I do not think there were that many true 40th's. IIRC, the total number of 97's imported was about 11,500 units.

Well, #2157 has gone astray.... I'm just relieved that Toyota didn't sell the numbered plaques willy nilly over the counter. Seems disingenuous to me.
