Question, again knowing nothing about 25's. will later 40/45/75 rims fit to make it roll onto a trailer better?

Hi Dave,

Good Choice Man. ;) Early 16" standard rims would fit easily. After your purchase, For any reason you decide not to restore it, I will buy many parts from you. After all I am your neighbour now. :grinpimp:

Cheers!

Ok, the owner just rang me.
He can't find the Chassis number on the chassis.
The build plate has FJ28, Engraved on it (he says its not stamped but engraved - on a proper toyota plate). He says that it has no year on it anywhere, just info such as engine capacity etc.
It does have a 4 speed, and has the plate on the dash stating its a 4 speed also.
He removed the tappet cover, and has wound the engine over, its not seized, and was running fine before it was parked some 20 odd years ago.
Does anyone know what years the 28 ran?
Id really like to find out a year before proceding.
The fellow is going to ring the state roads department tommorow, hopefully they can shed some light on it..

Dave,

First number of the VIN will tell you the year unfortunately. No idea how many or how long the 28 was made. The 25 ended in 1960. My guess is it's 1959 or 1960.

Forgot to tell you to look for the hood emblem, you'll need that too. In the pictures above, the Toyota in an oval I think was 58 and earlier, the Thunderbird ornament was 59 and 60. That's also when they changed the script on the side hood aprons from a big block lettered TOYOTA to the Toyota Land Cruiser that is seen on the aprons of yours. that's why I'm leaning to '59-60.

Also check the instrument cluster. The very early cluster had a rounded speedometer face that didn't look like the later FJ40. If you get it, pull out the cluster, it will have the month and year of manufacture stamped in ink on the back of it.

Good luck!

Thankyou Beaufort for alerting us to this auction!

fj28 and 28v were made in '58 and '59 afaik

Toyota Australia's Number 1 has the wrong badges on it. Or the one with the BPL 698 is earlier???
That would blow TMCA's original Number one claim out the window!!!

early 25's came into AUS as a cab chassis, rear bodies were all made localy......many different flavors

Don't know about the 75 rims but the 40/45 15" rims don't fit the front axle. The tie rod ends with hit the rim before it seats on the brake drum. I found this out the hard way. I drove over a thousand miles to pick up a Fj25. I brought my own tires and rims from a 76 plus disk brake axle. I ended up towing it back on some real old bias tires. This tires did at least hold air and I had two spare since the back axle would take FJ40 rims.

I would ask the owner if he has all five rims. Finding another rim would't be easy. In 1961 Toyota changed the rim style. The only vehicles that I seen with these are the 25/28/35. The last two only in pictures. The hole in the side is the give away if they are the 16' skinnys.

Good luck, John

would 16" split rims fit fj25's?

Yep 16" Split rim fits FJ25 with no problem at all, I have seen SOR's FJ25 (White One) with them, but I know in australlia finding early FJ40 16" standard rims (Pre 73 with hub cap clips on them and rivited centre) would be difficult but not impossible. They fit on mine with out any problem. :) and infact I like the extra 1 inch width of these rims.

Anyone in the US have that hood badge?
