Securing jerry cans from theft?

Was not criticizing anything. Just pointing out a couple of different considerations.

We have considered picking up a deuce and a half for hauling fuel and other gear on some trips. Eventually we probably will.

A 206 was about $650 an hour (dry) years ago. I have no idea what it is now but I expect it is around $1000 an hour dry. I don't want to even know what a 210 or bigger costs. A minimum 3 hour round trip to drop off just 2 drums of fuel.... and add the fuel costs for the helicopter on top of that. :(

I get out once in a while in a Cessna 150 or a Cherokee to look new areas over before we go in on the ground. Even that adds up in fuel costs. I really really don't want to think about helicpter fuel costs!

We have flown parts out from town in a Supercub for ridge top landings. Only once though and things worked out right that time in terms of cost.

But you can't carry much fuel in a Cub and you are more limited as to where you can land.

There are some river bars and rough landing strips at abandoned mines that we could use. But even a 185 can not carry all that much fuel when we look at what a group can burn. and even a 185 is pushing it for getting in on some of these strips.

A Deuce makes a lot more sense. Especially when you consider how much more it can carry and the other uses it can be put too.:) There are ways to get some damn big tires under those things.

Sooner or later I will probably have one. For now... we load fuel drums in M416s and jerry cans on the back of the rigs. ;)

Almost everyone I know uses a super siphon to transfer fuel from cans to tank. It's far less messy.

I just got back from a 1,500 mile round trip to Moab...
My fuel cans saw a rise/drop in elevation up to 8K
and I'm sure muh cans got shook up a little too.
was no leakage or mess from that.

decided not to stop for fuel at one point, on the return trip
Poured 10 gallons in 60 seconds... add 2 minutes to retrieve the cans and spout and place at the filler door.
not a drop of 10 gallons went anywhere but in the tank
was no mess .


I guess I just don't understand your complaint...
or maybe U have leaky spouts/caps

I just think it's laziness...
unless of course, one is pumping excessive amounts of fuel,
on an industrial level.

how I do it, works fine for me, with little drama...

I manage to spill some fine 87 Octane on my shoes....:bang::bang:

I'm probably just not as manly as you, I can usually spill a few ounces getting the spout aligned with the filler.

I also don't approach re-fueling like an Indy pit stop. I usually pick a nice spot to re-fuel and take time to enjoy the outdoors. :meh:

I *usually* don't spill any getting the spout in the tank. But every can I have used that has the external to the spout vent like the specters to has always spit at least a tables spoon or so out of the vent hole as it finished draining out the spout.

I can't say that I worry about it too much except in a nitpicky way.

What is worse is when you over fill the tank with either siphon or spout. A lot messier and more spilled fuel when you are dumping a can in and misjudge, but it sucks either way.

Been there, done that. Now I only put in as many full can as I know will fit without overfilling. Yeah, refilling has to happen more often, but then there in no spilling either.

neither my Scepter MFC's, nor their hi - flow spout leak a drop, when used
I don't know much about 'dese Specter's cans U got. :confused:
just maybe... being dyslexic... has got something to do with leaky fuel can/spout operation ? LoL/jk

I'll agree this ^ could bring 'deh suck...
But I've found that if I usually wait until the truck is near empty...
I can put muh two 5 gal. cans in without worry, and prolly three
'cause I don't fill muh cans past the Scepter specification of 5 gallons

see... I can be nit picky too ;)

A while ago, I was looking for means to secure my Jerry Cans and found this....
....thread.... but it is a bit of a ʞɔnɟɹǝʇsnlɔ.

Since this thread is supposed to be about ‘securing Jerry cans from theft’, I thought I’d add my deterrent. I say deterrent because if someone really wanted them, they could still get them.

I found these locking surfboard / kayak straps. They are nylon webbing with three SS cables running through them.
They could be used for a variety of applications that need straps. I hope someone finds this useful.
