Seatbelts on 91 FJ80 Not Locking (1 Viewer)

Hi,
Both our front drivers side as well as passenger side seatbelts are not locking when installed and jerked but when they are taken out of the vehicle and jerked, they work. The seatbelt retractor when installed is at the correct angle due to the tab that ensures they are installed properly as shown in the photo. I'm wondering if the mechanism that moves that activates the locking is bad, but they do lock when out of the vehicle and jerked. Perplexing us. Any help or insight appreciated.

Are you certain that you reinstalled the belts on the correct side/location. I would swap driver side to passenger side. There is a pendulum that needs to be set at the proper angles to work.

Thanks for the response and yes we did. In fact we took a seatbelt out of another 1991 FJ80 (different belt color) and that seatbelt did lock when tugged. The angle is set by that tab in the photo above so you can't get it off angle. Very strange.

It would be worth trying to clean them well. The seatbelts tend to accumulate dirt and gunk over the years and stop working as well. I'm pretty sure there are a few threads on here detailing the R&R of the mechanism.
