Seat swap bracket choices question and do I need to destroy my seats to fit Disco seats?

Hey folks,

This is a two parter:

First,

Does anyone have experience with either of these seat brackets? And how'd it go?

2nd,

Do I have to cut the feet off my cruiser seats if I used one of these brackets? I'd like to sell my seats if I can; they're in great condition but I just dont find them very comfortable. I dont think they'll sell well without feet.

I have planted in my cruiser. They're more designed for aftermarket seats.

Planted are great because they're a universal bracket. Wedge or corbeau are specific to what brand you're using.

So I'd only get them if you planned on getting new seats.

I think I'm picking up what you're putting down. I'm planning to put Land Rover seats in and am looking for a bracket. Sounds like for a universal bracket, planted is my best option.

I'm not familiar w/the disco seats. If they have a removable base then yes that will work.

I have recaro seats in my truck. Seats sliders and bracket are all separate.

Do you have the seats on hand already?

I built my bracket not using anything from stock seats other than the plug. That can be avoided if you don't want to damage seats.

Is it worth it to order the premade bracket? They're $140 a pop but I'd need to pay a welder to make the brackets otherwise.

Maybe I'll ask him what he thinks.

I'm trying to do this swap in the sub $500 range.

The planted look like a laser cut cnc item.

I ordered a set of the wedge brackets and mounted a set of seats from a Kia Soul in them. The idea was I could use them till I found some NOS recaros and upgrade in the future and use the same brackets. I was really disappointed with the wedge bracket. It didn't line up with the mounting holes perfect. Almost like it had warped from heat when welding. It looked like something built by hand welded up in a jig. It worked, but it looked like something I could have built at my house. I felt like I way overpaid for what I received.

@FranceJohnson , would there be welding involved if the planted seat bracket is used for the discovery seats?

@Beej there should be no welding involved looking at their platform. Depending on how their holes match up to that of the disco rail, it is possible holes might need to be drilled. The idea of the planted bracket is that it matches the contour of the floor/hump of the 80s and gives a flat platform to bolt on whichever seat you choose. After a year of using the Disco seats, I am a total fan, especially for the cost.

I am new to this and a relatively new FZj80 owner. I really want to replace my LC seats with Disco ones. I already have the seats and I have been searching the forums. You seem to have the answer to my needs. If you wouldn't mind going into detail how exactly you did your installation I would be forever grateful. Thanks Sean

Feels like a dead thread here. I ended up doing a swap to disco seats but I did end up cannabalizing my old seats to make it easier on myself. Took the feet, plug, and seat belts from the old seats to make it work. Well worth it to have the disco seats.

I ended up donating the renaming seat pieces to a guy in NorCal and he used them for his project so I felt okay tearing up the seats. ideally I would have loved a response here and seen how others did it, but I also am too impatient and just did it my way.

If you don't mind me asking how did you make the seat belt work? Looking at doing this swap for a '96 but can't find anything about how anybody ever made the seat belt work since the female side of the seat belt is incorporated into the LC seat.

The seat belt wasn't terrible but the LR seat belts don't work with the cruiser, different sizes for male and female ends of the belts. I just unbolted the seat belt female end from the LC seat and then screwed it into the LR seats. When I did my swap, a few folks I spoke to told me they took the seat belts from the donor vehicle, but I didn't want to even mess with it as my seat belts were working quite well so I rolled with it. If you need a picture of it let me know. Won't show much other than the female end into the LR seat.

The only complaint of doing it this way is the angle of the female end is a little off from the factory so it takes a little bit to get used to putting it in (insert Michael Scott joke here)

That would be great as anything helps. Any tips on fabricating the mount from the old seats?

I am by no means a fabricator and not great at welding but it works. Cut off the LR brackets using a cut-off disc, make a square frame out of steel bars, attach LC feet from donor seat, Weld inside vehicle to esnure fitment is correct (use extreme caution doing it this way.) I used fireproof blankets from work because I was too lazy to remove the carpet.
