Anyone have an idea on how long they typically last? It's a minor frustation for me for the belt not to retract much, so I was wondering if it'd be worth while springing for new belts.

my two rear belts did that. It turned out that they were folded over a little bit then retracted and I couldnt even pull them out all the way. I unbolted them and drilled a small hole in the plastic on the seethrough side and stuck a pick in there to lift the lever that holds it in. I then pulled out the belt, straightened it out then retracted it and it works perfect now. Anyway, im not even sure if that is what the problem is but if so, I hope it helps.
Goodluck,
Paul

Just like JP said. They tend to get folded over and then they don't work as well. Put your rear seat down, move the carpet and remove the 1 bolt that holds it. You can then move the plastic cover and manually pull them all the way out and rewind them in properly. I believe it's a 14mm bolt, I did this yesterday.

My two front belts stopped retracting. I took them apart and it was the mechanism that failed - both sides. Ordered all new front belts & retractors and have never been happier. Got rid of the whole spaghetti noodle mess going on in the front + I now have brand new belts versus 24-year old belts. A bit pricey

My friend is going to give me his rear 4Runner seat belts. Those should work nicely for the rear ones. I hate the stationary shoulder belt design on the rear seat belts. I always get passengers looking at me and telling me they're broken when all they have to do is adjust them. It's worth my while to replace them.
