Too far north. Too far east.
Ever feel like you have a bulls-eye on your fanny? Ya, happened again.

I came home yesterday and one of my neighbors flagged me down. Albert lives down the street, retired, and does a great job of watching over the neighborhood. He did an exceptional job yesterday.

About 10am yesterday he noticed somebody in the neighborhood walking around looking at people's houses and yards and acting very suspicious. Albert was in his truck, in his driveway, with a straight-line view of my street. The bad guy didn't see he was being watched. Well, the BG walked up my street and WALKS INTO MY COURTYARD. Albert was all over it.

He drove to the next street over, phone in hand dialing 9-1-1. He gets around the corner and THERE IS A COP SITTING THERE! No kidding. He flags down the officer, tells him there is a potential burglary in progress, and points him to my house. From what Albert said there were 5-6 cops on my house in a heartbeat. The good news, they caught the bastard before he broke in.

I haven't talked to the officer yet. He left his card on my door. From what Albert said they detained the BG for about an hour asking him questions. Seems the poor fella wanted to know which way Unser was.

You need to buy Albert a

-Mike-

So, when are you going to pick up couple of those IP cameras that we talked about?

Wow - I agree with Mike. You owe Albert big time. That could have been real bad.

However, how far can the police go? Can they prosecute someone for thinking about breaking in?

I think about all they could do is issue the guy a "notice of criminal trespass." Basically, this means that if I, or the police, catch the guy at my house he could be arrested. We do this all the time at the BioPark.

Next time we meet face to face I will show you the surveillance system I built for my house. The system records on motion, then has the ability to email me. I can check my camera's from any internet connection. The software is free. Check out the software at ZoneMinder: Linux Home CCTV and Video Camera Security with Motion Detection. I built the system running Linux (a free operating system). If you have some old computer you are already half way on building a nice system!

Wow Jon, thats awesome that Albert caught him before he broke in!
I hate thieves, they should be shot on sight...

Why is this always happening to Jon's residence?

Jon: maybe a move is in order for you....

maybe it was the guy that took his welder and knew what else was in the garage.:frown:

I agree, just can't afford to move.

I was watching TV and Marty had one of his ads on. Something about him being tough on crime. Let me think about this, under Marty's watch ...

I've had a bike and a welder taken from my garage (12 years a part).
I've had by cars/trucks broken into at least 4 times.
I've had two attempted burglaries.

Seems the cops he keeps pouring at the problem are no deterrent at all.

Doesn't a APD cop live one street over from you?

Cops, are not usually the problem. The scum gets a slap on the wrist and is back out to do more bad stuff. We need to get tougher on repeat offenders. I'm all in for some real hard time, like back in the day: Chain gangs, and leaving in tents (like the county in Arizona).

I guess I'd put some sort of signifcant theft protection system on the 40...

While they likely can't charge the guy with anything more serious than criminal trespass (and even that's a stretch since he was never ordered to stay off your property in the first place), they probably got his details (and maybe a photograph) for future use. It's also possible the guy could have been on probation for some other offense or had an outstanding warrant.

After you buy your neighbor a sixer, I'd recommend you go and get a really big, ugly dog.

More info. I talked with my next door neighbor, Tony, and Albert again. It appears they took the guy to the police station. They also told him to never show his face in the neighborhood again, which implies they might have issued him the trespass notice.

Tony was home when this went down. He walked around the block and saw a suspicious SUV a street or two over and started taking pictures ... at which point the lady driving took off. He did get the plate and gave it to the police. It was a black Tahoe, or related, with shiny rims. Everybody on the street is on notice to watch for this SUV.

Housing prices being low works both ways. You may think you can't afford to move, but unless you're upside down the house you'd buy would be low priced as well. There's also the FSBO route, which saves commission charges as well.

I still remember that when they stole our '85 4Runner from the NE heights (at Lovelace, near Target on Montgomery) they found it stripped in your neighborhood...

Dang I'm jumpy. I'm in the garage. Hood is up on Da'40, I'm standing on the bumper. 4Runner is in the driveway. I can't see the street, folks from the street can't see me. I'm wrenching, when I think I hear a car pull up. Then I hear "anybody here?" Turns out to be the officer that responded on Monday. The BG's name is Ryan Harris. The woman driving the dark SUV was his "home-girl." Both are known gang members. Ryan has a long rap sheet, mostly burglaries. Recently he broke into a house and the lady was home.

Jon: maybe a move is in order for you....

Jon, I guess I'd say "How much is peace of mind worth to you?" There are enclaves around here where crime is not on the forefront of everyone's mind. Portions of the North Valley, Los Ranchos and Corrales come to mind. You have a lovely house/property where you are, but do you need that much house and wouldn't you like more property to park or work on your stuff without anyone complaining? I can't speak for the other areas I mentioned, but even after 10 years in Corrales I still don't even think about crime. The vehicles are left unlocked as is the house more often than not, at least for short trips away. If the crime thing is really becoming a black cloud over your head, maybe you should consider a move. Yes, you realistically can't afford as nice a house in the places I've mentioned, but if that is not that important and you can have your projects without harassment maybe that's an option for you. Not preachin', jus' sayin'.

Then there is Salida, Colorado.
I think someone had a potted plant taken from their porch last year.
Can you telecommute to the farm?
