Waiting for AAA and figured I'd see if anyone else ran into this.

Pulling slowly away from a stop sign today and we hear a really unusual screeching/grinding noise and then the truck dies. It doesn't wanna start back up and the one time it did start it idled really rough for a few seconds and then shut down. A bunch of coolant dumped out the bottom but with the belly pan on its hard to see where it's coming from. Dip stick still looks good for oil. Water pump failure? I am traveling and about 15 hours from home, I don't have the reciepts with me from the PO. I know the t belt was changed around 80k but I'm not sure about the WP. I'm hoping it's simple and maybe just the WP but would that cause the vehicle to die? I don't think it overheated, we hadn't been driving long at all and the temp gauge was fine when I turned the key off and back on after it died.

Also, I think this is related but the truck threw a CEL yesterday and the speedo stopped working. I had autozone scan it and it's P0500. I had planned to replace the VSS once I was home.

Sounds like the water pump seized and grenaded. Assuming that's what the problem is, the rough idle/no run would mean the timing belt jumped teeth and you are now grossly out of time.
DO NOT try and start it again.
Sounds like you're in for a huge repair bill, timing belt, water pump and hopefully not a new engine.

Start simple before the doom and gloom of the "huge repair bill". If it was the water pump, they're only $200 new OEM, and then a few hundred more to install. If it is that, do the timing belt again, it's a "while you're in there" since they're both in the same location and same labor to get to.

Just to be clear, I was not trying to be doom and gloom, you said you're a long way from home so I assumed you have to pay to have this work done.

Yeah, I'm at the mercy of the dealership. I'll see what they say in the morning.

Very rare for these motors to get damaged even when the tb breaks. Doubtful you have internal engine issues.

What year model? I believe the earlier non-VVTI engines have been proven to not be an interference design but the VVTI versions are.

Great to hear .........."on the road again"

That's awesome!! How much was the bill?

$1500. Seems odd to be excited about w bill that large but it's better than what I was expecting. That also includes them replacing the VSS. It was around $1000 for just the t belt and WP.

That's not even close to as bad as I thought it was going to be. I was expecting like $2200 or so.
I'm very glad that it all worked out in your favor, both in no perminate damage to the truck and the wallet.
$1500 still hurts, bad, but overall, at the mercy of an out of town dealer...not bad.

Glad to hear one of my local dealerships treated you right!

Hopefully I won't have to use them until next Tbelt, but at least I know I will be treated right if I have to.

Glad to hear you are back on the road.
