Wow. That was a boatload of tedious work, and don't try this without a dremel tool or you're bound to be frustrated. I used the pictures others posted over the years to trim my bezel and Scion unit pretty close, then still needed 3 more test fits to get it right. You'll need a small diameter cutting wheel, and you'll want to have the face plate off the Scion, and the dash trim on a table to trim. Doing it in the car would make a mess.

Getting the piece of dash trim out on my '93 (you 95-97 guys score on this - much easier) was the real pain.

The end result? Sounds like I about doubled the power, and it seems to have also improved my AM reception and eliminated annoying whining when I charge my Motorola Razor on AM. Really a nice sound with the Pioneer speakers I put in this summer in anticipation.

Question: How do you change the display to the various colors, and how do you change the startup text to read "LandCruiser".

Tried search and after 15 threads ran out of patience so if someone would be so kind as to point me to it..

As far as color, which radio do you have again? T180X is the model. The last number is what counts. If your radio supports it you turn the radio off with the car on and hold down the menu button. The radio should pop up a menu - move to illumnation with the volume wheel and press it in to select. Scroll through to your color of choice and press the knob in to select it.

Something kinda nice you might want to do... With the radio on hold down the SSP button until it shows Car Mode: TC or whatever. Press SSP with this up to scroll through until you get to xB. It sounds better in xB mode imo.

Be careful with your new power. I've blown two speakers so far and I don't even listen to the thing very loud.

Sweet - my startup now says "LANDCRUISER" Thanks!!

My model is an 1807, and there is no 'menu' button for the color change directions you gave. Perhaps you meant another button name?

Thanks in advance!

There's only one model that you can change the backlit color on (mines not it)
probably not yours either.
Glad to see you went ahead with the install, it's a pretty sweet radio for cheap$$$
..................even without cassettes :D

Doug,

Does this radio still support the auto antenna and the dash antenna buttonfeature? Also, if the 1807 is not a color change model which one is?

Glen

Ah, bummer. Yes, the antenna and all speaker control features work as normal on my '93 (manual control on 93, auto started in 95). Just that now the speakers rock.

The Scion radio is a direct plug-in to the 'Cruiser. Toyota has used the same radio wiring plug since 1987.

I got an '07 Scion radio and dropped it in my '89 FJ62. All I had to do was to swap the side mounts that were bolted on. I will have to trim the face plate of the radio to get the dash to set all the way flush, but for right now I'm very happy w/ the new sounds on the 18yr old speakers. (those will be next)

My face plate shows 'Cruisers Rock when you power it on.

Might as well state it in this thread too as an additional data point:

2001 Tacoma unit (with CD player) was an ABSOLUTE plug and play into my '91 Cruiser. The Cruiser's side brackets bolted to the unit, fitment is perfect with NO trimming and/or shimming.

As others are reporting, it feels like about double the power, radio reception is improved, and it sounds like I replaced all the speakers. (I didn't.)

One disclaimer: The background lighting is orange. Don't know if I can change it to green or not. It catches my eye, but it doesn't bother me.

Only the newest have the multi color.
Mine is older and I can not change the display:(
Have you guys discovered the different model settings.
Push and hold down the ACC button, then up or down.
Changes the amp profile from xA, xB, xC etc
The xB being the larger has a significantly stronger amp profile.
I prefer mine on xB hear, feel for when I want it really loud

Suweeet! Can we see some pics, please?

Why would you do this instead of getting a aftermarket radio. sounds like a lot of trouble.
For lack of better words, I feel 99% of the aftermarket stereos are ugly as s***. I could pretty much care less what the outside of the car looks like, but I am very, very picky when it comes to my interior.

Why put in a Scion head unit?

Another excellent reason to put in a Scion head unit.

It will probably NOT get stolen.

In the past in two previsous vehicles of mine, I replaced their stock head units with nice aftermarket head units. Both of them were stolen within one year. One of my cars was broken into in daylight in my work parking lot.

Never again.

Another excellent thing to do is install an iPod adapter that plugs into the CD changer outlet in the back of Toyota and Scion head units. Excellent sound and the track up/down buttons on the head unit change the songs on my iPod. These items can be installed out of sight with the cable protruding from wherever, then tucked away out of sight when not in use. These types of adapters both charge the iPod and transmit the sound.

I've put these iPod adapters in my 96 Cruiser and my 2001 Camry. Stock head units = no break ins, no broken dash, no ripped apart dashes, no police report, no insurance dealings, etc.

I know audiophiles like their hi quality sound. For me, it's just now worth it. Not until all of the drug addicts in the world turn their lives around and quit breaking into vehicles.

Almost ready to put one in myself..

Good timing Doug, now I can pick your brain till your nose bleeds about it! JK

I'm looking for one that has the ipod wiring / plug with it. Most are selling for around 150 on ebay.

Got more info on this? Where to purchase, what model, etc?

You are thinking what I am thinking....

My head unit should be here this week, and I'll look to see if there is a plug that will work for ye old Ipod thingy.....

Reviving an older thread. Just installed a Scion 1807 model like Doug in my 95 cruiser. Everything works fine (after you disconnect the old amp - and trim the dash) and it sounds good. Now I want to get the i_pod wired in. Since it has an AUX button - there must be some sort of cable that can hook up the ipod to it.

I know my model isnt the full ipod control model - but it must be able to take an input. Anyone done this with that model?

Thanks. In reading the description - it doesnt fit my model (1807). However - I thought someone found a cheaper option. 70 is steep!
