looking at getting a new taco.... 4wd,truck will be used for moderate wheeling, camping, light to moderate trails help me out?

need a bit more info to give exact specs. imo a basic build for all around wheeling (mud, snow, rocks, fire roads...) just get a 3 inch suspension lift and beat the pinch welds down to run 33s and have fun. if you want to keep it cheap you can go body lift which i personally have no problem with but i know alot of others dislike them.

oh man i went and test drove a 08 quad cab...long bed...nice truck....they put lift(procomp)i want to say 6in rims and tires bfg ats....the only thing i would want (i think)but it may not be a big deal...no e locker it has the lsd rear andy complaints about the lsd? my wife really likes this truck tooo might even be able to get her out wheelin in it?

Was it the TRD Sport? I'd personally go with the Off-road package, and get the E-locker.

The TRD Sport has the Lsd. It will wheel just fine with that, i imagine, but the E-locker is really nice, too.

I had my truck in Moab 3 weeks ago, and only used the e-locker once, and the lsd porbably would have worked fine in that situation.

see thats what i was thinking....thanks hawk...

In stock form, Toyota Tacomas are easily capible of 4-5 rated trails on the Colorado 1-10 scale during fair weather.

With skids, sliders, small lift (2-2.5") and a rear locker, 6-7 rated trails are doable without body damage, IMO.

The double cabs are LONG! They do haul the family in comefort. They are about as long as a suburban! So don't expect tight turns on trails, LOL might have to back up to make it around some tight switch backs. The 05+ Tacomas are a little longer and wider than the 96-04 generation.

The double cab long beds are not available with the TRD Off-Road. You will have to settle for the 5' bed if you want the OR package (or if you go with an extended cab, you can still get a 6' bed). They are great trucks and I really like the 4.0L V6 engine.

I take my 06 out wheeling it surprises a lot of ppl. I have a 3 inch toy tec lift and 285/75R16 BFG AT's. i just had to do wheel bearings at about 75000km because of mud getting in them and the driverside front axle seal but other than that and a few minor dents my double cab auto does really well.

Having been weaned on an '85 Extra Cab minitruck that I bought new, and that rusted out on me (frame), I was forced to buy a Taco. I waited until the '05s came out to see what they looked like. I found them to be fugly and too large. So I bought an end production '04. It's nice and all that, but too much wallow for me (from the IFS) compared to my mini. If I could have a brand new '85 mini, I'd swap my Taco for it in a heartbeat. Obviously, YMMV.

It's my dd, but would do what slow95z recommends if I had to wheel it.

I agree that 85's were awesome, but if you're talking about a daily driver, I have to disagree. Those trucks were HARSH! Not comfortable at all. I would NOT want to daily drive those trucks. Even 86+ were much more tolerable on the road. You also have to remember that 1985 was 23 years ago. Youthful bones can take much more abuse. :D

The new Tacoma's are very comfortable and very safe. You will have lots of fun in it and it won't wear you out like the older trucks. IMHO.

I guess harsh is subjective. I've always preferred a firm suspension, starting with my vw bug I had in 1970. Anyways, I had an OME lift kit in the mini, and that smoothed out a lot of the stock stiffness. I may be an old fart, but I don't like plush.

well thanks all who replied...its basically up to mama...she will drive daily...me on the weekends and up campinig
