Being given a salvage title has NOTHING to do with the % or severity of damage to the vehicle. It is just an insurance adjuster's $$ calculation -Salvage Value+repair price=/>than book value. A door ding on a cheap car can total it. Insurance companies are fine to cut their losses on wrecked cars but shouldn't be allowed to assign them a legal/safety designation just based on the repair cost.

Ok people. In CA, which is probably the least consumer friendly place on the planet, your veh title status and registration status have nothing to do with who's at fault in the accident.

Cool, looks like we're seeing who here would buy a branded title vehicle & who wouldn't.

My wealth of knowledge only extends to the fact that a salvage title can be upgraded to a rebuilt title, but like the wisdom provided by an insurance agent - either keep it on the farm / trailer it to a trailhead - or if you buy it & drive it, you better dang well be able to recite the state vehicle code where you travel lest you get in a situation where someone sues you & you're left exposed to risk.

I'll be a chump & just stick to clean rides, even if branded titles don't expose you in a wreck they're harder to liquidate if you need, and I KNOW you can't get a loan for one with the title as collateral here (maybe bankers get the situation too).

I'm one less guy as competition for buying salvage rides for all you who think them a great value (and probably are, just not for me).

IMHO, it depends on local laws and what you want. Here salvage titles are pretty easy, about the only hit is reduced value, in resale and payoff if hit again, if you don't have much in it :meh:. With their age it doesn't take much to total an 80 series, could be simple cosmetics.

I know of, wheel with a few salvage rigs, for instance: This one is a combo of two wrecks, was pieced together ~10yrs ago and has been wheeled often/hard. It's a relatively low miles rig, clean interior, not so much outside, so makes a good, reliable wheeler, at a great price. True, it wouldn't bring top resale, but he doesn't care and doesn't intend to sell it, in fun value it likely paid off a longtime ago.
