Have you tried the search function? It might take a bit of sorting through, but if someone has posted about it you will be able to find it.

i did a search and only found one thread, but it didn't really give any info on the conversion at all. I think i would just need an adapter for an aod to the fj transfer case

I found a kit from advanced adapters. It is not listed in their catalogs, but they do have it. i will keep you posted with updates. Thanks for all the help

You planning to build the AOD or just stick a used one in? The AOD has some issues, depending on how much torque you put into it. Even for my stock 302 (in a pickup) the transmission guy that built mine upgraded the clutch pack. If I wasn't a cheapskate I would have agreed to an aftermarket valve body too to get firmer shifts. Depends on how hard you plan to push it I guess.

main problem is length. The AOD is a long ass tranny. You would do a lot better with a C6 or a C4. startlooking at drivetrain length with the AOD. I bet it will be a very tight fit with the stock WB..

i'm not sure how long the setup is i have not measured it yet. Do you think that an ls1 with a th400 would be a better setup. Teh aod is a lentech strip unit that i used in my 9 sec mustang. The only downside is that it is a full manual valvebody though

Quite a few small block chevy's with the 700r4 in FJ40s. Ends up with short rear drivelines, sometimes CV instead of u-joints, custom small front driveshaft flanges, modified transmission pans, flipped rear springs to move the axle back, etc. All doable but maybe tedious.

Not sure if the AOD is longer than the 700r4. Probably is. I have a 700r4 4WD sitting in the garage. I could measure it. Or easy to Google I'll bet. Can't help much more than that.

ps - Why in hell would anyone take a 9 sec Mustang apart? :D

I think the SBF is a more common swap in Australia. Mark's makes adapters for the Ford.

according to advanced adapters the aod is 20.5" long the th400 is 21.5" long and the 700r4 is 23.5" long

That's encouraging. You might also ask AA about the differences between 2WD and 4WD AOD and whether they support one or the other or both when adapting to a Toyota transfer case. Good luck. I hope you do the Ford swap. We already have a bunch of Chevy boys and girls here. :)

Yes, the tranny length is 20.5" But the adapter would be at least 7" in length.

And, AA does not even make one for the Cruiser tcase. The AOD mini tcase adapter is 10" long.

They also do not make a D18 adapter...

Ford 302 dimensions.
Length 27"
Width 22"
wt = 460 lbs

Chevy 350 dimensions.
Length 28"
Width 22"
Wt, 575 lbs

Ford motor weighs less than a 350 but is not significantly smaller.
Data from here http://www.carnut.com/specs/fengdim.html

The problem with the AOD is the governor that is on the output shaft. It is about 5" away from the back of the tranny. So it is hard to make a shorter version of the AOD.

FWIW, these look like the old dimensions. The final (current) version of the 302 has a shorter nose on it, which allowed it to fit in the Exploder and T-bird. They are also lighter due to thinner castings, removal of mass from the rotating assembly, smaller aluminum frt end & WP... Overall, the engine is kinda flimsy, but they really managed to remove excess weight & bulk from what was already a compact design.

aa does not list an adapter, but i spoke with one of their sales guys and he said the have one that will work. The length numbers that i posted are for the case only, not with the adapter.
