how the hell did they rate Maurices BBQ in columbia as 2nd best in state.....how the hell did they come to that conclusion. were they thinking all bessingers were the same so gave it to the oldest and most infamous...or because it was in columbia the state capital? WTF?

obviously only asking college kids as they did not hit any joints other than columbia and charleston either....there is one in manning I love as the best vinegar based i have eaten.

Southern Magazine Reveals Best BBQ Joints in the Carolinas|ABC News 4

Don't get me started.

Sorry Mike, I have refused to eat at Maurices the whole time I have been here. I have not tried Little Pigs, but I here it is pretty good. I love the Little Pigs in Myrtle Beach, but I don't think they are related. Do you know?

While we are on BBQ, would anyone like to cook in a contest in May at the fairgrounds?

It is the annual Sertoma Club BBQ Charity Cook-off, I am going to be the Sous chef with the guy that usually puts it on every year. This year he has stepped down from running it, and is just cooking.

Yeah I never read anything that has to do with BBQ in a magazine. Most of the time unless it is from the mouth of the owner it's all BS. Word of mouth is the only way to really know the best. And by mouth I mean what you put in your mouth as well as what others say. To me there is no such thing as the best BBQ. There are so many types so many ways it is impossible to do. It's like saying there only one good beer. Also like microbrews the taste changes from day to day, batch to batch. Smoking wood changes from tree to tree. Not all pigs are the same. Not all ingredients are the same once opened and then stored.

There are hundreds of great great BBQ joints all around the US. Saying there is just one is foolish. I will say though I wouldn't have thought of Maurices as being in the top ten. But hey they were using a popular vote. Everyone knows about Maurices.

That BBQ joint in Manning you were talking about. I know about that place. I drive through there on my way to the beach all the time. I always see tons of cars heading down that road. Now I'm going to have to stop and check it out next time. Thanks.

I thought they decided not to do it. That was the last I heard. Last year they moved it up to Edisto. I was there for that one. Awesome place.

As far as the guy who puts it on every year are you talking about Tommy Brush?

Am I the only one who doesn't have a prefrence regarding mustard, tomato, vinegar or dry, etc.? I just plain like good BBQ.

The way I figure, if you cook it, make it the way YOU like it. It's damn near good everytime if you do that. Don't alter your cooking to try to make what I like. You won't like it as much and it won't compare to the other I've had before.

The only real opinion I have is the meat itself...it's gotta be pig. F the rest of that mess.

I dont either...I grew up on Bessingers mustard based with the big cake batter onion rings....but I do love a hickory smoked or vinegar based bbq as well. Dont care for tomato based too much actually...

Tommy is the president, he definately is the big man running it. Meaning the WHOLE thing. I was talking about one of his volunteers that made sure every thing was organized and executed for the cooking competition. My friend didn't work last year in Edisto either. Said it was too far, and too expensive.

I was told last week that they were doing it in Columbia this year. I am not sure the Edisto deal last year was well received. Seemed a little more exclusive than having it here. Sounds like you are more versed than I about this. I'll be in touch when I find out more details.

Anyone been checking out the new show Pit Masters? Haven't seen any one of their "Stars" win anything yet in the first 3 events.
