I need to remove some light rust and existing paint on a newly purchased hood. I just got a quote from a local body shop (blast ,bodywork, and prime) for $500 f'n dollars. So.. looks like I'll be doing everything myself, starting with a buddy's sandblaster. Never done this before too.

Do I need to worry about warping the metal?
Any tips/recommendations on a particular media?

Thanks

Well, as far as eqipment goes, whatever somebody else owns is always the perfect tool for the job.
Yes, you can easily warp steel by blasting it, so use a generous rake angle when you blast yours, and dont dwell in one spot too long.

media type

plastic media is great as well as baking soda. Any type of "sand" media can warp the thinner metal. If it were me I would use baking soda.

I've read somewhere on these forums that walnut shell is also pretty safe for sheet metal.

100% recycled glass is what I used on my doors. Did not get any metal warpage. It's light in density and cleans really well.

Silca sand is not a great cleaner. I really don't like the slag abrasives. The lighter the material the less damage it will cause.

Try to find the 100% recycled glass.

$500.00???

I did my hood, fenders, bib, bezel, gas tank cover, and several other pieces for $80.00.

He just went light on the large open expances and knew what he was doing, using sand. Came out perfect...

Yea, my project has expanded to a front bib, various smaller pieces, and of course the hood. I'll post some pictures of the hood before I get to work. Thanks everyone for the help!

It helps to put some stripper on the paint before you try to blast it.
you my friend are either trying to poke fun at me, or 'splain that. How does the media not stick to the stripper?

I had the hood, fenders, bib and aprons on my lv blasted with media (stardust or something like that) and primed for around $200.00 and had it all back in a week. Best money I've spent.

The stripper doesn't stay liquid. It lifts the paint and drys. It's a pain when you're trying to just use the stripper because if you attack too big of a spot the stripper dries on you and it's hard to scrape off.
