For sale: 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser, 1HDFT Diesel, manual 5 speed transmission, part time transfer case, factory triple locked, San Diego

The Truck is a 1996 US FZJ80, 272k miles, white original paint, factory triple locked.

It is one of the three 80 series that the late Marv Specter originally converted to diesel. I bought it from Marv in 2011 with a 1HDT and a used H151F transmission and an HF1A transfer case. The tired 1HDT was then swapped out against a new 1HDFT (yes, new) and a new H151F (yes, new) in 2016. At that time the HF1A was rebuilt with all new bearings and seals from Terrain Tamer. Starts at the first turn of the key.

The truck has a clean CA diesel title. Not a grey title, a clean title that says D as motor power element. It was inspected by the CA DMV and signed off. Happy to tell the buyer the whole story that led to that.

I took extremely good care of this truck and it is 100% ready to go anywhere and completely reliable. If something was broken, it was replaced with new OEM parts. If those were unavailable, I used rebuilt used parts. Everything works and it does not leak a drop. Always garaged and under a dust cover.

Chassis is rust free. The frame and axle housings have small spots of surface rust, as all of them have after 30 years of service. All photos are as it sits now. It’s a 30 year old truck, so it has some tiny scratches and a few small bumps. It has never been repainted.

Sorry, 272k miles on the chassis, I mistyped 256k in the title.

Specs:
1HDFT, ~25k miles on it
H151F 5 speed manual, ~25k miles on it
HF1A transfer case, ~25k miles on rebuilt
Triple factory locked, with a new locker actuator in the rear
Front AVM lockout hubs, rebuilt last month
G turbo Grunter 2, Australian air to air intercooler with hood scoop, custom 4 core radiator. This truck has a lot of power and will pull up any highway grade in 5th gear with power to spare and no smoke, and it won't overheat. We had this all over Baja and the South Western deserts many times and never had any temperature (or other) problems,
The injection pump is mapped to the turbo and has a 14mm plunger, not the usual 12mm one- so if you want to turn up the fuel towards ungodly power, you can. But then I would recommend high flow injectors, which are easily available from Australia.
The clutch is a heavy duty 300mm clutch from XXXi industries and has ~25k miles on it.

Last month the truck underwent a meticulous service of all parts (see more below), and I put brand new OEM injectors in. You can expect ~21mpg.

Done last month:
Rebuilt alternator with heavy duty parts
Completely redid the front axle with new bearings, seals, brake rotors, lug studs, calipers
All new steering parts, New steering rods, tie rod ends, steering stabilizer (OME), followed by professional alignment.
Renewed AC system (all O-rings, expansion valve, Evaporator assembly new OEM, Thermistor, all tubes, all relays, resistor), and the dirt behind the dash was cleaned up while all was apart.
New Kenwood DMX4707S, installed correctly including connection to parking brake.

Other goodies:
OEM 80 series snorkel, installed correctly
Heavy duty skid plate
Dual batteries with front runner management system (disconnects house battery from starting battery)
Blue sea fuse block in rear.
USB outlet in rear
2 inch heavy duty Dobinson lift. The springs have light surface rust, but don’t sag.
Tailgate storage box
New windshield and OEM gasket installed correctly in 2021
New rear glass gasket (there were the usual two rust spots under the gasket, so the glass was taken out, rust was correctly repaired, and glass reinstalled with a new OEM gasket
New heater valve
New rear sprayer valve

It has 2 tanks, the factory one and a Toyota OEM second tank above the spare tire underneath. OEM dual filler neck, all correctly installed, so you get 23 plus 12 gallons of diesel to play-that's 600 miles plus. The second tank fills the first one with a transfer pump that is controlled from the dash.

Third row seats and brackets are included.

ABS was removed when the front axle was converted to part time, and a proportioning valve was installed and adjusted.

ARB winch bumper with winch front (harbor freight badlands 12k, new synthetic rope).

Bumpit offroad custom bumper rear built for a second spare tire, and a holder for a jerry can, shovel, axe, pick, and high lift jack.

Tires are BFG AT 33 inches with ~5k miles on them.

Inside:
New Kenwood sound system, with new speakers
Australian rubber floor everywhere, professionally installed
The front seats have new OEM motors and gears (from Gamiviti)
The seat leather is perfect and protected by grey SOR bulldog covers
Outside thermometer
EGT, PSI, temp triple gauge
Rosen Aircraft sun visors (original visors come with it)
New front seat belts in 2020 (grey)
New passenger mirror

That’s all I can think of right now. I built and maintained this truck, so ask me questions, or ask me for specific pictures. I try to respond quickly, but keep in mind that I work full time, so answers might come in the evening or a day late. If you want to see it in person during daylight hours (which I recommend) and test-drive, we’ll have to do it on weekends.

Tons of good and hard to find spares come with it-hoses, filters, steering rods, alternator, A/C parts… if you can think of it, I probably have it.

I had this truck for a long time, and it was/is great. So why am I selling it? We are getting older and just bought a new Land Cruiser. While it does not have the cool feeling of the 80 series, it’s a great truck and we enjoy the modernities. So, it’s time to part with the old.
I am not giving you the BS about how much has been invested and what it would cost to build this from the ground up. If you know these trucks, you also know the numbers already.
$45k.
