Just got back from six days near Goblin Valley, Utah.
Two dads, four little girls and a dog crammed into the 80 with a mountain of gear on top and pulling a small tent trailer.
Power:
I'm envious of Marc's new 100. My 80 had a HARD time on the hills. In fact, the biggest is just outside of Salida - Monarch Pass. Sustained running at red line in first gear to get over the pass. It just bogs down in second gear. I really hate that big jump between first and second. The first time I've ever witnessed the temp gauge move. To just under the red zone.
Steering:
A couple of hours later, pulled off the road for a break and what's this? No power steering! How come? No obvious leaks, plenty of fluid, which does not smell burned. Never noticed a problem with engine oil pressure (same drive gear as PS pump). So, great, not going to do much off-roading limited to strong arm steering. Man, what a chore, no more one-handed driving with coffee in other hand. Call to Dan - "any advice?" Maybe air in the system, bleed it by jacking up the front end and turning the wheels lock to lock a number of times. Did this once in camp, no effect.
Then...
Two days and a few miles later...
The power steering CAME BACK.
And has been working just fine all the way back home.
Any thoughts? The only thing ever out of the ordinary was the abnormally hot engine temps for the time it took to get over the pass.
Muffler:
The weld on the front pipe broke early into the trip, so we had a rattle and some exhaust leaking. But it held up fine otherwise. Any advice on a replacement muffler? I want quiet (I like a loud V8 but quiet 6).
Quiet and SMALLER than the stock one, which I have used to support the vehicle on a rock a number of times. Exhaust hangers don't like that much.
Goblin Valley:
Fantastic place, excellent slot canyon hiking and lots of 4x4 potential.
