Hi everyone,

I'm planning to install a Saginaw Power Steering Kit on my FJ40 with a 2F engine. I’ve attached a photo of the parts included in the kit for reference. Here’s a list of what’s included:

  • Sealed bearing for firewall/steering column
  • Borgeson steering shaft
  • Power steering box and mounting plate
  • Drop pitman arm, tie rod, and steering drag link
  • GM old-style power steering pump with bracket and wide pulley for the stock 2F belt
  • High and low-pressure lines
Some small parts, like nuts and washers, aren’t shown in the photo. I’ve read that these conversions can significantly improve handling, so I'm excited to get this set up!

My questions are:

  1. Are there any specific steps or challenges I should be aware of when installing these components, especially the steering shaft and firewall bearing?
  2. How should I align the power steering box and mounting plate to ensure everything connects correctly to the pitman arm and drag link?
  3. What’s the best way to route the high and low-pressure lines to avoid any interference with other parts in the engine bay?
  4. For those who have done this conversion, are there any common pitfalls or tips to make the install smoother?
Any guidance, photos, or references would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Looks like a pretty good set up. The only thing I would warn about is be careful with mounting too close to the swing of your shackle. That power steering pump bracket is hated by everyone I know who has one. George at Valley Hybrids can get you a much better one that just mounts to the motor mount bolts.

I put an 80 series box on my FJ40 recently. Best thing is to just mock it up with c clamps. You will get a feel for clearances and issues really quick.

Thanks for the advice! Good to know about the bracket issue.

That kit looks very similar to the one I installed. The bracket that gets welded to the frame might be different, but it's been a lot of years since I did the conversion. I posted a blog about the install, you might check it out to see if it helps you.

Thank you for posting these directions, they are extremely helpful. I purchased the same kit as the original poster. Unfortunately the existing bolts on my land cruiser do not line up with the supplied flanged bearing from the power steering kit. Do you know the size and or part number of the flanged bearing that you used on your land cruiser? Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

I'd scrap that big bearing. There are better and cleaner ways to add a bearing at the bottom of the column.
Unfortunately you'll have to remove the column. Unplugg the column, remove the 4 bolts at the firewall and 2 bolts under the dash. Below are part #'s of bearings you could use or some vendors sell the bearing. I bought one at a lawnmower repair shop. Slide the bearing over the shaft and up the tube and reinstall the column.
